Extractions: The islands of Samoa comprise the last large areas of land east of Australia in the central Pacific. Their size has helped them accumulate and support a diversity of plant and animal genera not found further to the east as well as a rich, endemic flora and fauna of their own. About 80 percent of Samoas lowland rain forests have been lost during the 3,000 year history of human habitation. Given current trajectories, a devastating loss of native forest is predicted to occur within the next 20 years. Location and General Description Samoa consists of a chain of 14 volcanic islands located 600 km east of Fiji at 13 to 14 S latitude and 168º to 171 W longitude (Whistler 1980). The Western Samoan islands of Savaii and Upolu make up 90 percent of the archipelagos land area and are separated from Tutuila and Aunuu Islands of American Samoa by 64 km of ocean. To the east about 100 km lie Ofu, Olosega, and Tau Islands. Even further to the east is the tiny Rose Atoll. The islands increase in age to the west. The eastern island of Savaii most recently erupted in 1903 and 1911. In the west, Tutuila is at least 1.6 million years old (Whistler 1980). The tallest mountains are on Savaii (1,858 m) and Upolu (1,116 m).

The country has an elected legislative assembly, called the Fono, that consists of 47 matai and two members representing the non-Samoan community. All citizens aged 21 and over are eligible to vote. The head of state, largely a ceremonial title, is currently a member of one of Samoaâs paramount chiefly families. He holds this title for life, but when he dies the legislative assembly will elect the head of state to a five-year term. Actual executive power is vested in the head of government, a prime minister who is selected by the Fono from among its members. The judiciary is independent of both executive and legislative branches and includes the Supreme Court and lower courts. The chief justice is appointed by the head of state.

It is impossible to cite here all the works from which information for this field guide has been obtained; the following list provides some of the more important ones, including some published since 1997. Some of them are books, obtainable in libraries, bookshops or direct from the publisher (the publisher and city of publication are given), often via the world-wide web. Others are journal articles in the technical scientific literature, which can generally be found in the libraries of most major universities and natural history museums. Almost nothing has been published previously on the snails of the Samoan Islands in the popular or semi-popular literature. Some more general texts on both snails and the Samoan Islands are also listed. Abbott, R. T. Compendium of Landshells. A Color Guide to more than 2,000 of the World's Terrestrial Shells . Extractions: Asia-Pacific Regional Press Freedom Seminar Country Report - Samoa Having to make materials (such as correspondence and photos) available to someone suing a newspaper for defamation before the case goes to court, is one of the restrictive elements of the 1995 Defamation Act which is in place in Samoa's media laws. This is also well before a determination if there is a case or no case to answer. We in the media see this as mainly a ploy by the government at the time to discourage members of the public from writing revealing letters to the editor under non-de-plumes, often about mismanagement and corruption in high places. Samoa also has a Criminal Libel Law still in place, a legislation recently used by the late Prime Minister against the Samoa Observer newspaper. The case was dropped after the passing of the plaintiff. Such legislation is seen as archaic and must be scrapped. There are also the Printers and Publishers Act; and the Indecent Publications Act. Samoa's media today, enjoy unrestricted freedoms within the confines of the principles and ethics of the trade, compared to say seven to ten years ago when three pieces of legislations were rushed through parliament mainly to curb media and information freedom. The laws are still in place although we have been told by our political masters that they serve a purpose synonymous to 'Big Brother' - watching over you. Samoa's media exploded over that time especially privately ownership media outlets. Today with a population of 171,000, there are seven radio stations - 1 state owned assuming the role of the public broadcaster, three fully commercial stations owned by a single company and two owned (separately) and operated by the Pentecostal churches.

Extractions: Introduction... This is an attempt to trace the development of ITU's (formerly CCITT's) country codes assignments. Information was gleaned from vintage ITU/CCITT "Books" (i.e. the Recommendations which are the international telecommunications standards), and whatever else was available. There will be numerous details to be filled in (dates of changes, introductions, circumstances etc). Additional, corrected or updated information to this end would be welcome at wtng(at)wtng.info Document History... Format... This file is ordered first by time (when country codes were established, changed, deleted, etc) then within each particular time by country code. The initial list of 1964 is shown; only the changes are listed thereafter. The 1960 CCITT Red Book featured a list of country codes for Europe that was the precursor for the modern international telephone country code system. Whether this was ever available for subscriber use is unknown; this could have been intended for operator dialling rather than customer dialling. That list went as follows (* represents a code that remains in use in today's country code plan): Note from Dik Winter regarding 60-Luxembourg: "At least this country code has been used in the Netherlands (but at the same time the country code used for Belgium was 32). That must have been in the early sixties indeed. I do not have parts of a phone book showing it, I have only parts of Amsterdam phone books and when direct dialling from Amsterdam to Luxembourg was allowed much later the country code was changed to 352 as it is now, but I have noted it down from another Dutch phone book (presumably that of the province of Zeeland)."
