Glossary Lasers put to the test near Athens ATHENS, Greece Sailors contended with light and shifting winds at the Athens pre-Olympic test regatta at the Agios Kosmas sailing centre south of the Greek capital. The official Pre-Olympic regatta will not be held until August 2003, but the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Greek organisers decided to stage a practice regatta this year. Scheduled for the same week as the 2004 Games themselves in the Saronic Gulf, the test regatta is designed as a dress rehearsal so that competitors and race officials can get a true test of the onshore logistics and on the water conditions. The Greek organising committee (ATHOC) has been under considerable pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to get the infrastructure and stadium building projects underway. YOUR SAY E-mail us with your views on the world of sailing Planning difficulties as well as a downturn in the sponsorship forecasts mean many of the projects have been reduced in scale.

Why Losers Are The Real Winners - Olympic Info : Olympic History - olympic fans, ask yourself this why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorievavault with Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself. http://smh.com.au/olympics/articles/2004/06/18/1089484305112.html
Extractions: September 30, 2000 Olympic fans, ask yourself this: why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorieva vault with the pole? No, besides that. Could it be the same reason you enjoyed watching Jai Taurima in the long jump? Michelle Ferris in the cycling? The little-known Justin Norris in the swimming pool? Perhaps it could. The real reason (okay, the other reason) you loved watching Grigorieva in the pole vault is that she jumped a personal best. Put aside her obvious beauty (and the way she silenced 110,000 sports fans by placing a manicured finger to bee-stung lips). Put aside the silver medal (and the email called The Silver Medallist that is doing the rounds). What, really, is the sporting point? It is that Grigorieva did better than she had ever done before. Sure, American Stacy Dragila went higher and broke a world record. Bully for her. Grigorieva was also making history. Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself.

News Print Email Last Updated: Friday, August 27, 2004. 2:15am (AEST) Brazilian Torben Grael has made history by becoming the first man to win five Olympic medals in sailing. Grael, 44, and team-mate Marcelo Ferreira, 38, captured gold in the Star class with a race to spare in Athens, embracing and punching the air as they crossed the finish line. A fourth place in race 10 gave them an unassailable lead with the silver and bronze medals to be decided on Saturday, the final day of the Olympic regatta. The battle should be fought out by France's Xavier Rohart and Pascal Rambeau, lying second, and Canada's Ross MacDonald and Mike Wolfs, close behind in third. The Australian pair of Colin Beashel and David Giles were in 12th position after the 10 races. Grael and Ferreira were also Olympic champions in 1996 and bronze medallists in Sydney, when they led going into the final race but were disqualified for a false start, scuppering their hopes of successive golds. Six-time Olympian Grael, nicknamed "Turbine", also won silver in the Soling class in 1984 and bronze in the Star in 1988 with Nelson Falcao.

Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.
