Extractions: Home About HIMSS Contact Us ... Job Opportunities at HIMSS The industry is best served when non-profits collaborate on issues that raise the waters for all. HIMSS actively seeks collaborative opportunities with its sister associations. The HIMSS Board of Directors firmly supports and encourages such initiatives, and welcomes ideas for new endeavors. The following is a brief overview highlighting some of the collaborative efforts currently underway. Supported by both AMIA and HIMSS , the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI) represents more than 2,000 nurses and brings together 18 distinct nursing informatics groups that function independently. These groups operate at varying levels of local, regional, national, and international involvement and have established programs, publications, and organizational structures for their members. The ANI Steering Team consists of representatives of organizational groups that have a nursing informatics focus, guiding the strategic direction of the Alliance throughout the year. Most of the nursing organizations participating in the ANI do not have a staff complement, therefore the umbrella alliance provides a path to coordinate activities and inform industry initiatives. The basic objectives of the ANI are:

Madison Patient Safety Collaborative - Projects The Madison Patient safety collaborative of Madison, Wisconsin is Held aMedication safety Week that had activities addressing dangerous abbreviations. http://www.madisonpatientsafety.org/projects/abbreviations.htm
Extractions: The MPSC project focused on four targeted abbreviations: qd, u and the inappropriate use of leading and trailing zeros w/ decimal point. Baseline data was collected at each institution and shared followed by the use of improvement cycles. Each member enacted interventions thought to be most appropriate and effective for the respective organization and, after several months, data was again collected and analyzed. Members then determined whether interventions found to be effective at one organization could be adopted by others to yield greater results in the next improvement cycle. Some of the specific tactics used by the 4 hospitals in this collective endeavor include: Educational/awareness interventions Sent letters on error-prone abbreviations to physicians and nurses from medical leadership/physician influentials. Placed educational articles on topic in internal publications, posters around the organizations, signs in nurse/physician restrooms and screensavers on computers reminding about error-prone abbreviations.

Extractions: This strategy, intended for adoption by ECAC Ministers, describes the principles, objectives and steps required to increase capacity to meet the demand, to reduce ATM-related unit costs and to increase safety between 2000 and 2015. It treats the whole airspace as a continuum, unconstrained by national boundaries and as a network that includes the airports. IATA and other airspace users helped Eurocontrol to develop the ATM 2000+ Strategy. Airlines are requested to support it so that it can be used as the basic ground plan for all future development and implementation programmes.

CDC - OCSO - Blue Panel Meeting Summary Report Comments Review the intramural and extramural collaborative activities of the vaccine safety Vaccine safety activities needs to be completely independent (6) http://www.cdc.gov/od/ads/brpr/brprcomm.htm
Extractions: Vaccine Safety Activities PROCESS In June 2004, Julie Gerberding, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requested that a diverse group of individuals be convened to review the vaccine safety monitoring and research activities at CDC. The meeting was a 2-day meeting in which participants engaged in frank and wide-ranging discussion of current programs and perceptions about the safety of immunization. In addition, the discussion emphasized a collective awareness that vaccine safety is a subject that requires much broader governmental and private involvement in keeping with the evolving characteristics of disease epidemiology, community expectations and expanding clinical and laboratory science. The group of individuals was asked to review and discuss three objectives during their 2-day meeting. The purpose of providing objectives for the participants was to assist them in discussing the vaccine safety program at CDC on a broader level; therefore, they were not convening to discuss specific vaccine safety studies, the thimerosal issues, the recent IOM report or other more specific details of the vaccine safety program.
