Extractions: May 2002 The refuge of a large number of civilian citizens, among whom a few armed men, to the Church of the Nativity during the incursion of the city (by the Israel Defence Forces) stirred an international outcry that triggered a number of questions about the fact of seeking refuge in a place of worship for protection. I do not wish to trail, here, behind news reports, whose only aim is to highlight the thrilling, and the unusual with a view to draw universal attention. The question is much more important and deeper than we anticipate, therefore, I shall try to embark on the discussion of an idea that has long turned up over and over again in my mind. It is that of the sacred place, while leaving the concept of the sacred time aside, as I hope to lay a firm foundation for the idea of the sacred human being. In the Holy Bible we also find this concept in some texts that spoke about places of refuge for killers who did not commit a premeditated murder or the innocent who are accused, as they all could get there for protection so that their lives are spared and they avoid harm. In Deuteronomy, God said to the people Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land. And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live; Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly God approved this law so That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, and so blood be upon thee. These were the cities of refuge (Review chapter 19:2-10).

But in no way does it exempt me from dealing with the natural stages of earthly grief, be it the emotional toll, the physical loss, or just coping with the understanding that it takes time for Life, in It's Infinite Wisdom, to reorganize the vibrational shift so that the loss of a loved one is not so acutely sharp. It takes time to adjust to the communication shift, and for the physical loss to heal. And even for the 'enlightened,' there are 'growing pains.'

We declare certain books to be holy and distinguish them in the way we study and treat them, from books which are mundane. We treat holy spaces with particular reverence. The Torah teaches that God created the world by making distinctions, first between light and darkness, next between water and empty space, finally between earth and water. We, too, make distinctions in our lives, and primary among them is the distinction between sacred time and ordinary time. To mark the beginning of sacred time, we light two candles and recite a berakhah (blessing) which praises God who commanded us to kindle the lights in celebration of the occasion. We mark the end of that sacred time period with a ceremony called Havdalah, which means "separation." It, too, begins with light, as we kindle a braided candle. The most common time to perform the ceremony of Havdalah is weekly at the end of Shabbat when three stars appear in the sky. Havdalah is also performed at the end of other festivals and holy days.

It used to be that there was mighty little to read that was written by Christian theologians or thinkers if you wanted to mine the Christian tradition for its rich wisdom and insight on the environmental crisis. Now I cant afford to purchase all the books out there in theology, spirituality, ecofeminism, earth ethics, ecojustice. And it used to be that putting ecology and liturgy in the same sentence sounded, well, a bit curious; and now, a gathering with that as its focus draws musicians, clergy and lay leaders, urban and rural activists, contemplatives and mystics to Holden Village in September for the conference Sacred Time, Holy Ground. Worship, ecology, activism, prayer, scripture and the arts: Holden has been making the connections for a very long time. And Holden, long a place of hospitality, wisdom and formation, has been a groundbreaker and innovator especially in the area of worship, and in linking ecological education with theological education, particularly in its summer programs.
