UNHCR - TEACHING TOOLS - LANGUAGE & LITERATURE lesson plans FOR AGES 1214 IN language/LITERATURE The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig. Purpose This cluster of lessons revolves around the novel The http://www.unhcr.ch/static/teaching-tools/tchlang/12-14lp.htm
Extractions: This cluster of lessons revolves around the novel The Endless Steppe , the autobiographical account of the author's 5-year exile in Siberia during her late childhood. The story of Esther is about hardship, deprivation, injustice; but above all, it is about how a child's zest for life takes her through these tribulations, and helps her to become part of her new community. For the necessary entry behaviour, tell the students that this story begins in Poland, during the period of the Second World War. At the beginning of World War II, Germany and Russia agreed not to attack one another. In September 1939, Poland was first invaded by the Germans, and then by the Russians. Up to a million Poles were deported, many to Siberia, including the author and her family.

Extractions: The Republic of Lithuania lies in the western part of the East European Plain. Situated on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, in north central Europe, Lithuania has an area of 65,200 sq. km.(25,165 square miles). Lithuania is slightly larger than the U.S. state of West Virginia and slightly smaller than Denmark. It is bound by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the southwest, Kaliningrad OBlast (a Russian territory) to the southwest, and the Baltic Sea to the west. The low-lying coastal area along the Baltic coast, known as the Pajurio Lowland, extends some 15-20 kilometers from the sea. To the east of the coastal plain lies the Zemaiciu Upland, which rises to a height of 234 meters at Medvgalis. The Upland is separated from the Baltic Highlands of the south and east by a long plain across the central regions called the Middle Lowland. Agriculture and forestry have long been important in these regions. Lithuania is criss-crossed by a dense network of waterways. The longest and largest river is the Nemunas, which flows east to west and empties into the Baltic Sea. The vast network of rivers which lead to the Baltic Sea have provided important links from the cities and villages to the coast.

Extractions: Teaching Language Through Action As an ESL/Foreign Language Teacher Trainer for the last 25 years, I have often been asked about proper materials to successfully implement the TPR and Natural Approaches. I am happy to share these with you. I hasten to let you know beforehand that every one of these books has been tested in the classroom. Either I personally have found each of these successful, or I have observed teachers using these successfully. Each of these has been proven to be outstanding. These books are user-friendly, providing activities that are full of fun, and EACH ONE WORKS!! I have been careful to indicate the level of each work. This refers to the LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY LEVEL, NOT THE GRADE LEVEL. To be more specific: Level 1 refers to the student who is starting at Ground Zero, whether the student is 5, 15 or 25 years old. This is the Listening Comprehension level. Level 2 Going from Listening Comprehension, and making the transition to Speaking, Reading, and Writing. activities.

Extractions: In September we welcome the first wave of this year's British university students who have chosen to spend a semester studying Russian with our specialist staff at LL Moscow as part of their degrees. A tailor-made academic programme, focussing on a wide variety of subjects embracing Russian language, literature and culture, coupled with a diverse excursion programme, promise to give the students the best possible opportunity to make the most of their time in Russia. August has seen the arrival of a group of new students with an alternative approach to learning - Work-Study. Aspiring EFL teachers from UK, USA and Canada are currently undergoing intensive teacher training at LL Moscow before dispersing to centres in Moscow, St Petersburg and Volgograd where they will combine Russian study with teaching English. Not only are they benefiting from studying Russian in Russia (proven to be the most successful means of language acquisition), but they are also gaining international work experience teaching English. We hope they enjoy their stay working and studying with Language Link! July 2005 saw the launch of a new programme for international students coming to learn Russian in Volgograd: Russian study through excursions. The lessons were held in a variety of places including the "Cossack Kuren" Museum of National Architecture and Life, the Mamaev Kurgan memorial complex, the museum of 18th century Volga Germans called the Old Sarepta, and on the territory of the Volga-Don canal. In the classroom the teacher provided the students with essential grammar and lexical materials which then helped them to understand the guided tours, discuss related themes, compose dialogues, describe what they had seen, and read short texts. One lesson particularly enjoyed by all was "Russian Cookery" in which the students themselves cooked okroshka and shashlyk, explaining how they did it in Russian.
