Storytellers on Tour Have students practice retelling folktales in their classroom. When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.

Extractions: We have all heard that "When in Rome do as the Romans do."That advice is equally appropriate when visiting the Russian Federation so it is important to know a little about what the do's and don'ts that Russians will expect of you. This paper describes some of them. In it, I draw on more than a decade of continuous travel between the US and Russia and the suggestions I make are illustrated and confirmed by the many American and Russian students I have been privileged to have in my classes. Of particular interest to anyone who plans to go to Russia would be some ideas of American students whom I taught at the Grint Center of Education in Moscow. These were students majoring in International Affairs, Russian Literature or the Russian Language, who came to Moscow from different US universities. They were much more prepared to come to Russia to live for a semester of study abroad at the Grint Center than regular American tourists who visit Russia for several days or read major American newspapers dealing with Foreign affairs. They lived with host families or at the dormitories of Moscow Linguistic University at different times during 2000-2002.

It has been quite a while since I last emailed. This is because I have been thankfully relatively busy. (By the way, if you happened to email me anytime in the last several months, chances are I didn't get your message. My current email address is cedoli@wmalumni.com, though I prefer to be reached by regular mail.). I have started work on a secondary project (my primary being my assignment at the AIDS Center). My fellow Balkan Welayat health Volunteer and Virginian, Elynn, and I had similar ideas of how to improve the Peace Corps health manuals that we already have and so we decided to make a Health Activity and Lesson Plan Book. Originally our book was to help volunteers, but now we are targeting it towards local health educators as well as PCVs. We have noticed that while doctors and nurses are knowledgable about health issues - as they should be - they are often uncomfortable with teaching and reluctant to do it. And when they do teach, they rely on stale lectures that do not engage their audiences. Our goal is to provide them with a resource that shows how to teach and provides the materials needed for more interactive lessons.

ESL / EFL Jobs Home When you open a traditional language course book it usually starts with lesson 1 and goes down to lesson 10 or whatever the final lesson in the book might be. Naturally you follow this logical structure and when you have completed the first lesson you move on to the next. At least that's what the authors of the book recommend you to do. And it all makes perfect sense, doesn't it? A language course must have a beginning and an end. Now, let's think about this again. Is this really so? What happens if you skip the first five lessons and start with lesson No 6 and then you move on to lesson No 3 after which you jump to lesson No 8. Have you tried this already? No? Then that suggests you like rules and structure. Do you speak your mother tongue fluently? Of course you do so you have proved that you can learn any other language as well. Our psychology is programmed in such a way that we assume it must be hard work to learn a second language, it must take a long time and a lot of self-discipline but that's not the case. Do you know that a child aged 6 - 7 years already uses most of the grammatical constructions of their native language? (including any form of the conditional)
