GDP per capita in Russia climbed steadily from 1991 to 1997 (1995: $1,868; 1996: $2,910; 1997 $3,056), but then dropped sharply in 1998, to $1,867 per capita. For 1999, early estimates suggest that per capita GDP fell to levels on par with the early 1990s. Industrial production According to the Russian State Statistics Committee (Goskomstat), industrial production in the late 1990s was only 45 percent the levels achieved in 1990; other sources suggest larger declines. Among those sectors hit the hardest by these severe declines were the military-industrial complex and light industry. Inflation In 2000, Russian inflation continued to decrease from the spike that followed Russiaís 1998 financial crisis. 2000 levels were not yet on par with the lowest levels achieved in the mid-1990s (11 percent in 1997), but they remained far from the more than 2,000 percent inflation rate from 1992. The following chart shows the progression of Russian inflation rates between 1994 and early 1999.

Today economists fear they may still be getting a unrealistic picture of what is really happening in the country's economy but for very different reasons. Russia's rough and tumble capitalist economy is evolving so fast that official number-crunchers simply cannot keep up with every twist and turn as new businesses take root and old Soviet-era enterprises go to the wall. "Looking at the (official) statistics alone, without thinking about the anecdotes, without knowing the stories and without trying to relate those two, gets you into trouble," said Al Breach, a chief economist at Brunswick UBS Warburg who has followed the Russian economy for more than six years.

This includes rich agricultural land from which grain, potatoes and livestock are the main products. Land reform has been one of the most awkward problems facing Russias post-communist governments: much has been turned over to private ownership but a substantial proportion, especially in the more remote areas, is still owned collectively. Agriculture now accounts for 5 per cent of total economic output while employing 13 per cent of the workforce. Russia has huge deposits of oil and gas its major export earners as well as coal and minerals including gold, diamonds, nickel, manganese, copper, iron ore and phosphates. Further unexploited deposits have been located and there are undoubtedly more to be discovered, but they are often in areas (such as the permafrost-covered regions of Siberia and the Russian Far East) where exploitation is technically difficult and transport systems limited. Business: As a result of recent economic changes which have taken place in the Russian Federation, there are now many thousands of private companies in operation and international business relations have become active. The main business centres are Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk and Vladivostock.

Extractions: Since regaining independence Latvia has rapidly advanced towards restoring a market economy with steady economic and financial reforms paving its way. Latvia may be a small country with its 2.5 million inhabitants, but it is a potentially attractive market for American IT equipment and services, capital machinery and equipment, and consumer products. Located at the center of the three Baltic States, Latvia provides a strategic location as a commercial, financial and transportation hub for the Nordic/Baltic region. The Latvian economy grew at a healthy pace from 1995 until the Russian economic crisis hit in 1998, which slowed growth temporarily. This resulted in negative fiscal and external account developments and noticeable contractions in GDP and industrial production. Towards the end of 1999 the economy picked up again, as the budget cuts recommended by IMF started to show their effect, and trade and FDI figures improved. In 2002, Latvia showed a rather enviable GDP growth rate of 6.1 per cent. Even stronger growth has occurred in the first quarter of 2003 (8.8 per cent). Current forecasts show a GDP growth of 7 per cent expected for the year 2003. If this growth rate is realized, Latvia will have posted one of the highest GDP growth rates in all of Europe.

At that, profitable enterprises are concentrated mostly in communication (63,3%), trade and catering (64,7%), construction sphere (54,1%) and industry (53,5%). Enterprises of the housing and communal economy, transport and agriculture are the most unprofitable, share of these enterprises makes up 65,3%, 54,5% and 50,7% respectively. Over the first half-year of 2002, 58,700 organizations (with the exception of small-scale business, agricultural enterprises, banks, insurance and budgetary organizations) gained profit at the rate of 548,4 billion rubles. 51,400 Russian enterprises suffered losses to the sum of 185,4 billion rubles. At that, balancing financial result (profit minus losses) of Russian enterprises over the first half-year made up 363 billion rubles in current prices ($11,5 billion), that is 240,3 billion rubles less than over the same year-ago period (603,3 billion rubles). January May, 2002 from 1,200 to 1,500 as compared with the same year-ago period. Amount of loss gained 18,6% to 10,5 billion rubles. Balancing financial result of average and large-scale enterprises in Moscow made up 116,7 billion rubles over the same period, the Moscow City Statistics informs. Effective debt of Moscow enterprises made up 1 trillion 696,3 billion rubles as of June 1, 2002 (it is 21% less than by June 1, 2001). Outstanding debt of Moscow enterprises made up 173,8 billion rubles, or 10,2% of the total debt.
