Article 2488 of rec.sport.rugby: Newsgroups: rec.sport.rugby >From wft@math.canterbury.ac.nz (Bill Taylor) Subject: Re: Olympic rugby .....the TRUE FACTS ! Message-ID: Nntp-Posting-Host: sss330.canterbury.ac.nz Organization: Department of Mathematics, University of Canterbury Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 01:36:59 GMT There have been a large number of "I-seem-to-recall-reading-about-this" posts. Here at last is some genuine info about this olympic rugby matter, straight from "The Guiness Book of Rugby Records", which I have *here* in my office, alongside the keyboard, right now ! It has been laboriously typed in by me, for the benefit of all, (kindly send donations to the address below). [irrelevant comments deleted] Introduced by Baron Pierre de Coubertin (who refereed the first ever French championship final), rugby was on the Olympic program at Paris in 1900, at London in 1908, Antwerp in 1920, and Paris again in 1924. In 1928 the I.O.C. turned down the request to stage rugby at the Amsterdam games. Three factors were believed to be behind this: the IOC wanted more emphasis on individual sports; women's athletics had swollen the number of competitors; and the sport did not receive the backing that it should have from the British entries. Both the Soviet Union in 1980 and South Korea in 1988 made attempts to have rugby readmitted, and it should be pointed out that South Korea came desparately close to achieving their aim. [* I never knew this! -wft]
What Is Rugby? rugby was included as a sport in four olympic Games (1900, 1908, 1920, 1924),and the United States claimed victories in both the 1920 and 1924 Games. http://www.peninsulagreenrugby.com/whatisrugby.html
Extractions: In an age when Britain was the world's leading power, with imperial colonies all over the world, rugby quickly spread far and wide. The game's bonds were then cemented by rugby's unique tradition of touring to play in foreign countries, or hosting teams traveling from abroad. Meanwhile, the first international match, between England and Scotland, was played in 1871. So-called "test" matches have further strengthened the game's worldwide following. In the 1990s, however, the IRB and IOC at last took steps that could lead to rugby's return to the Olympics. Rugby was not part of the 2000 Games in Sydney, and as with other requesting sports, shall not be part of the Athens Olympiad in 2004 - primarily due to logistal prorblems and inability of the IOC/Athens to handle new sports and its athletes.
Sports Face 2012 Survival Test As London basks in its status as 2012 Olympics host, 28 sports are braced Golf, squash, karate, rugby sevens and roller sports are all pitching to be http://www.rediff.com/sports/2005/jul/07sports.htm
Extractions: As London basks in its status as 2012 Olympics host, 28 sports are braced for a vote to decide if they will feature in the British sporting extravaganza. Golf, squash, karate, rugby sevens and roller sports are all pitching to be included in the 30th modern Olympics. But for any of the five to be included, one of the existing 28 Olympic sports will have to be voted off the programme at the International Olympic Committee Session in Singapore on Friday. The sports will face a vote one-by-one and must win a majority from IOC members. Any sport which fails to win more than 50 percent of members' votes will be dropped from the 2012 programme. If a sport is dropped, the IOC executive board will select a replacement from the list of five candidates. The sport recommended by the executive board to replace an outgoing one would first need a two-thirds majority to become an "Olympic sport" and would then need a simple majority in a second vote to be admitted to the 2012 Games programme. Olympic sources in Singapore say it is unlikely the members will eject a sport for fear of causing irreversible damage to its status and finances.

Extractions: The 117th session of the International Olympic Committee ended in uproar last night in Singapore when squash and karate, the two candidate sports that survived an exhaustive elimination process to advance to a vote of the general assembly, both failed to secure the two-thirds majority required for admission to future Games. "Amazing, just amazing," said John Coates, president of the Australian Olympic Committee and one of the 105 IOC voting members who took part in the ballot. "We started the day with 28 Olympic sports. Now we have 26. That's it for another four years. There won't be another vote." Australia's three IOC members, Coates, Kevan Gosper and Phil Coles, supported the inclusion of sevens rugby, which was pipped by karate in the "best of the losers" second round of voting after squash won the initial round.
The Australian: There's Gold In Those Olympic Rings [ 18jun05 ] Some 81 years after its last outing as an olympic sport, rugby in its seven-a-sideguise - is trying to get back in. First order of business that day at http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/printpage/0,5942,15646781,00.html
Extractions: While hopes are being piled high around the June 27 meeting in Brisbane to debate what format the proposed Super Eight tournament will follow next year, only four developing rugby countries stand to benefit - Japan, Samoa, Fiji and Tonga. But when the International Olympic Committee general assembly gets down to business on July 8 in Singapore, every tier two rugby nation will hold its breath. Some 81 years after its last outing as an Olympic sport, rugby - in its seven-a-side guise - is trying to get back in. First order of business that day at the Raffles Hotel will be determining whether any changes are to be made to the Olympic program. There are 28 sports on the Summer Games program and three of them, softball, baseball and modern pentathlon, are waiting anxiously in the tumbrel, not knowing whether it's the guillotine for them or a last-minute reprieve. From an Australian perspective, reprieves would be no bad thing, at least for the two bat-and-ball sports because Australia won medals in both in Athens.

Extractions: The Development of Rugby episkyros or the Roman game of harpastum . Some have also tried to show how rugby and soccer were developed by the Celts or imported by the Anglo-Saxons and Normans. It has even been asserted that football was a product of the native Britons who celebrated the defeat of an enemy army with a ritual game played with a ball. Given the lack of historical evidence however, there is no way to successfully defend any of these arguments. The development of rugby can be divided into five overlapping stages, from the 14 th century until today. Each stage of game development, except that between one and two, required a demand for more orderly and restrained behavior according to what Norbert Elias calls the civilizing process of the game. This is what Norbert Elias calls the civilizing process of the game. This civilizing process also led to a sports ethos developed in the public school system in England, which Pierre de Coubertin would use as a model for the Olympic games. th to the 20 th century football was an entire class of folk games that were relatively simple, wild, and unruly. There were simple oral rules and considerable variation in the style of play from location to location. These folk games were the common matrix from which rugby was descended.

Extractions: Rugby sevens, the favourite to replace any sport voted out, also failed to earn a place despite support from the IOC president Jacques Rogge, a former Belgian rugby international. So did golf, which might have been hosted at St Andrews in Scotland. Roller sports were the fifth activity rejected by the IOC members.

Well almost, because bar smaller changes, the regions awarded the honour to compete in the Super 14 some weeks back will still be able to do so. Already big name players like Schalk Brits and Jacque Fourie have been speculated about in Bloemfontein and it will be interesting to see how the need for development of black players are distributed amongst the regions. The central regions have been good to black players in the past and many will probably go there to develop and improve their game.
