Extractions: Baseball and Softball Dropped from Olympics July 8 2005 The 117th International Olympic Committee session in Singapore voted today to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the program of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the program for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the program of the 2016 Games. The IOC Executive Board will convene later today and decide whether any of the five candidate sports (roller sports, world squash, golf, karate or rugby) should be put forward to the session. The IOC membership will then vote on whether the sport or sports could be added to the list of Olympic sports and then potentially be included on the program of the 2012 Games. Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936. "Needless to say, these sports are very, very disappointed," IOC president Jacques Rogge said after announcing the result. "However, I have to emphasize the fact that they should not fear this purge. The fact is that they shall not be included in the program of the 2012 Olympic Games, but it does not disqualify them forever as Olympic sports."

Discuss Diamond cutter: IOC drops baseball, softball for 2012 02:53 AM CDT on Friday, July 8, 2005 From Wire reports Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained. The IOC will consider replacing them with two sports from a waiting list of five: golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. That decision will be made Saturday. Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936. The United States won a gold medal in softball in each of the three Games (Atlanta, Sydney and Athens) it has been a medal sport. The U.S. baseball team did not qualify for the Athens Games. Baseball has been vulnerable because it doesn't bring top major league players to the Olympics. Softball has been in danger because of a perceived lack of global appeal and participation.

Four-letter words are thrown around faster than the ball, and mothers in the stands seem to breathe only when play stops temporarily. One coach impatiently paces the sidelines and shouts instructions to his team. The tattoo on his bulging left calf reads, "Give Blood, Play Rugby." Behind Wallace Wade, on a windy day in February, the undefeated Duke rugby team takes on rival Wake Forest in an ACC showdown. "To play rugby, the main mindset needed is really putting yourself in the position to hurt or to get hurt," says senior forward David Dabney. "It's more willpower than anythingwilling yourself to get out there and tackle the biggest guy on the field." Dabney, who learned the game while living in Australia, is just one of several team members who bring an international flavor to Duke's style. Head coach Ian Cumming, a native of Wales, leads a squad peppered with veteran Canadian and English players, along with many American students with little or no playing experience.

Extractions: July 1, 2005 International Olympic Committee member Kevan Gosper has thrown his weight behind rugby union being included in the Olympic program. Gosper said yesterday that if the IOC executive board put forward rugby union for consideration, which might happen as early as next Friday, he would vote for it. "The sport I would most support to get on the Olympic program would be rugby," he said. "I would like to see the 15-a-side version in the Games, but I understand the logic of having rugby sevens instead for its universality." Rugby also has the imprimatur of the IOC president Jacques Rogge, who played the game for Belgium. In the biggest shake-up of Olympic sports since 1936, when polo was eliminated, all 28 current Olympic sports have to face a crucial vote by 116 IOC members next Friday at the IOC meeting in Singapore. Rogge has foreshadowed that this scrutiny of sports will occur after every Olympics. If any sports fail to get the required 50 per cent majority vote, then they will be sidelined from the Olympic program for 2012.

They are the first sports to be cut from the Games in 69 years and it means Regents Park, which was due to host them, will no longer be a 2012 venue. Squash and karate were initially nominated as their replacements but neither polled enough IOC members' votes to win a place at the Games. Rugby union sevens, golf and roller skating were also in the running. International Olympic Committee members went through seven rounds of voting to decide which two of the five sports should be put up for a vote to give them Olympic status. Squash and karate were chosen, but not enough of the IOC members wanted them to be included. It means the earliest they can now be introduced into the Games is 2016.
