Extractions: Aside from the miracle of St Catherine, the Burning Bush is thriving in the courtyard of the monastery. The Bush had originally been growing inside the monastery as the monks had originally built the walls around it. However, now the root was guided under the walls to a courtyard just outside where this 3700 year- old plant flourishes. Emil, our Egyptologist and friend, told us that there is no other plant like it anywhere else in the world. It was astounding to see how robust it was and as I stood beneath it, there seemed to be a Presence there. One can never tell if something gains its energy from those who believe in it and therefore create its mystery or if the mystery comes first. It was clear that whatever was creating its power could be clearly experienced. When we returned from the monastery that morning Emil, Gary and I held a Native American pipe ceremony to send our prayers out before we made our climb up the mountain that afternoon. I have taken the pipe all over the world to weave the prayers wherever I go and can feel the Spirit of the Pipe with me when I offer myself for planetary transformation.
Extractions: The student must notify his or her instructor of the reason for absence as soon as possible. Where the reason for absence from a scheduled assessment is known well in advance (for example, in cases of religious observance or participation in University activities at the request of University authorities), the student must inform the instructor by the end of the schedule adjustment period. Prior notification is especially important in connection with final examinations, since failure to reschedule a final examination before conclusion of the final examination period may result in loss of credits during the semester. Where the reason is not known well in advance (for example, in cases of illness or compelling circumstances beyond the student's control), the student must inform the instructor as soon as the reason develops, if that is feasible, or, otherwise, as soon as possible after its development. All examinations and tests shall be given during class hours in accordance with the regularly scheduled (or officially "arranged") time and place of each course listed in the Schedule of Classes. Unpublished changes in the scheduling or location of classes/tests must be approved by the department chair and reported to the dean. It is the responsibility of the student to be informed concerning the dates of announced quizzes, tests, and examinations.

My father, blessed be his memory, used to tell us that he also studied as a child with the same REB ELIAHU the melamed. Therefore, it can be claimed that our joint rabbi was an aged distinguished scholar when we studied with him. I remember that we learned in the evening by a common tallow candle, not a paraffin candle, which every boy would bring, a candle each week. On the hearth or the stove burned a little firebrand that was the chamber's lighting. Electricity was not yet a part of our world; one had not yet heard about light bulbs. A small lamp or a "koornik" was the lighting in middleclass homes. The rabbi, a poor melamed and an old man, did things the old-fashioned way. A firebrand to light the chamber and a small half candle to study with the children. Thus studied not only the big Gemorra students, but also small four to five year-old little elementary level children, who learned Hebrew and a section of the Pentateuch. One was not satisfied with a half day, as now, but one learned day and night. So, one learned and indeed deeply learned, everyone after his manner, after his ability. Judaism remained in great part strongly rooted.
LENTEN BLESSINGS After yom kippur and rosh hoshanah, the season of introspection, repentance andrenewal Let s keep trying since the struggle itself can teach us things. http://www.stsams.org/LENTEN99/table21.htm
Extractions: Lenten Blessing for March 9 Lent Week 3, Tuesday March 9, 1999 "Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent you only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace." The readings today show the tension surrounding the law. The law is a gift, a demand, and a stumbling block. Through the law we are called to strive for the best we can be and through the law we fail over and over again. We fail in what we owe to God and to our fellow humans. We make promises, enter into covenant, and fail to keep them. We make our sacrifices and they count for nothing. They cannot appease, they cannot save. I am late sending this reflection. I received my assignment and eagerly looked up the lectionary readings, hoping to draw some good ones. My heart sank when I read these and I've been resisting ever since about sitting down to work with them. They cut too close to the bone for me right now. Since my husband left last Fall, I have spent much time reflecting on failures and broken promises. The promises we had made were often all that held us. God knows we both made bloody sacrifices in the name of holding things together. I may never sort out how much was genuine affection and how much stubborn pride and a weird sense of honor. Horton may have said it best: 'I meant what I said and I said what I meant, and an elephant's faithful, one hundred percent.' In the end, he seems to have done me the favor of being the one to crack, at least sparing me the dishonor of being a promise breaker, though not the shame of being relieved.

Extractions: Member Drash Rosh Hashanah I, 5761 Delivered on September 30, 2000 / Tishri 1, 5761 by Art Braufman Over these Yamim Noraim, those of us who attend all services will be here for over 20 hours of prayer. That's a lot of time. Today, I want to explore with you what do we expect to get out of this investment? How can we best utilize that time? As I prepared this drash, I felt like the Hazzan who wrote Hineni, the prayer chanted by the hazzan prior to the Musaf service on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I too am filled with trembling and self-doubt and wonder who am I to stand before you on this holy day to talk about such a holy subject as prayer. Yet, as I look around and talk to people, it appears to me that many of us are struggling with prayer, so I feel driven to share some thoughts that may help enrich our experience and make these Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe, a truly transcendent, awesome experience. May my words be accepted as a search from the heart of a fellow explorer searching for the path to Adonoy. In this drash I sometimes use the masculine to refer to God, and I also use King instead of Sovereign. Also, I say "we" - yet I don't assume that we all feel the same way or share the same beliefs or struggles. I hope those terms don't interfere with my message.
