Now you realize all of a sudden that there's tons of stuff here; in fact, if you go about it right you'll probably find more on ancient Rome here than on any other site in the world. You're wondering how to find what you're looking for. Save yourself lots of time and improve your chances by taking two or three minutes to read this carefully. You will save the most time and get the best results if you read it thru the end of the page. Clicking on the search engine I provide is often not the best thing to do; If you're looking for something else, this probably isn't the place. For example, I'm not interested in ancient Greece: for ancient Greek history, try starting here . Neither is my site a Latin dictionary: for that you should see ; and for the modern-day Roman Catholic Church, see Catholic.net 2. For Italy, this site is a very variable resource: pretty good for the city of Rome and central Italy, very patchy for the rest of the country. This site is, however, a very major resource for ancient Rome: if you can't find it here (onsite or linked to the offsite page), it may just well not be online. The odds, however, are you're just running around clicking wildly:

Extractions: Agustus - (27 BC - 14 AD) Agustus' first step was to repair the bitter wounds of civil war. On January 13 of 27 BC, Octavian, in his own words, "transferred the Republic from my own power to the authority of the Senate and the Roman people." This action showed shrewd political planning, as Augustus used it purely for public show. The Senate awarded him the name of Augustus, and mobs demanded that he retain power. Augustus carefully retained the titles of traditional offices to disguise his absolute power. He kept only the offices of consul and proconsul and claimed that he held no more power than his colleagues. Some Romans complained that the loss of liberty was too great a price to pay for peace, but most recognized that under the so-called liberty of the Roman Republic, a few hundred men had divided the spoils of empire while the workers and the provincials suffered. The majority of Romans welcomed the peace and stability of the Augustan Age. The rule of Augustus brought social stability, economic revival, and efficient administration to Rome, but it was unable to ensure the future. Augustus seemingly owed his power to the Senate and Roman people; in fact, his power came from his personal authority, and there was a real possibility his death might trigger a renewed civil war. For decades, Augustus watched his chosen successors die until only his stepson, Tiberius, remained. His selection of an heir outside of his immediate bloodline set the precedent for the future; struggles for power once fought on the battlefield were now waged in the imperial palace.
