Since then, over 200 decorated caves and rock shelters have been found in France and Spain. The most spectacular of these prehistoric paintings are at Lascaux. Unfortunately, the original Lascaux Cave is no longer open to the public but this website provides an excellent reconstructed copy of the cave. Mark Millmore's Ancient Egypt How to Make a Mummy : More than 5,000 years ago, after burying their dead, the ancient Egyptians learned that the burning desert sands desiccated corpses. Instead of turning to dust, the skin shriveled up and clung to the bones. Mummification - the practice of dressing for success, eternal success - had begun. And since they did not want to spend eternity looking rotten, those who could afford to had their bodies painstakingly embalmed. Embalming, as practiced in ancient Egypt, was a lost art, until Bob Brier decided to learn by doing. He and a team of experts retraced the steps of the Egyptian masters. The story is told on this National Geographic website.

Dead Romans Ancient roman art, history, coins, a virtual walkthrough of the Colosseum and about roman coins, architecture, and artwork from the Early roman empire. http://www.deadromans.com/
Extractions: I started Dead Romans in 1996 to present information about collecting Roman coins. Shortly after that, I assembled about 60 photographs I had taken of the Colosseum into a virtual walkthrough. I liked the result and received encouragement from visitors here, so in subsequent trips to Rome I took more pictures. Now the walkthrough has more than 200 photographs and I have more to add. Why the name "Dead Romans"? One of my friends, when helping me decide where to go on vacation, commented that I "only want to go to places where there are dead Romans." It was a wry comment that appealed to my sense of humor, so that's what I named my site. This site is dedicated to teachers, students, historians, writers, antiquarians, numismatists, artists, and all who seek to understand a little bit more about the ancient Romans. Extractions: The Battle of Hastings : A comprehensive website on the Battle of Hastings that with the right backup material could be used successfully in the classroom. The website consists of 850,000 words and 300 graphics. There is no search-engine but the material is well organised under headings such as: Kings of Wessex and England, Where is 1066 Country, Why did the Battle Happen?, The Build up to the Battle, Harold's Battle Force, William's Battle Force, The Battle, The Aftermath, Norman Rule After 1066, etc. The author has also provided a comprehensive glossary of words and people. Battle of Hastings On 1st October 1066 King Harold was celebrating his victory over King Hardrada at a banquet in York when he heard that William, Duke of Normandy had landed at Pevensey Bay. King Harold immediately assembled those housecarls who had survived Stamford Bridge and marched south. When Harold realised he was unable to take William by surprise he positioned himself at Senlac Hill near Hastings.

Extractions: Location: http://www.emory.edu/CARLOS/class.gal.html This site contains a detailed account of Greek and Roman civilizations and what influenced their cultures, pertaining to how their artistic view points came about. One can find pictures of the sculptures that were found in their respective societies. Along with the pictures are detail accounts of the significance of the sculpture and what the sculpture tells about its respective society. I would advise anyone interested in the arts to visit this page for the textual explanations that are found here are wonderful. A serious scholar would be surprised at the amount of information found at this site, for what some would say very small pieces of artwork. Grace Gonzalez Location: http://www-mice.cs.ucl.ac.uk/local/museums/BritishMuseum.html This site provides a list of areas covered by the exhibits in The British Museum. If one clicks on one of these topics, they are brought to a more detailed description. Other than this, most of the site is details about the location and business hours of the museum. There is also a mentioning of certain lectures given and films shown. This site is authored by M.Dennig in London, United Kingdom. This site would be helpful to someone thinking about visiting or planning a visit to this museum. Although there are no photos and hardly any text, this site serves its purpose well.
