My father taught me how to cook, and we talked for hours. Based on reports from other people, the relationship I had with my father during those adolescent years was quite unusual. I felt I could tell him anything. And I could. This did not mean he would honor any request I made, though. In my case, I pursued my commitment to skating independently. I didnt even require transportation to an arena to show my family that I maintained sincere interest in skating. After years of garage practice, I believed I had proven my devotion and deserved to be rewarded with real lessons. Skating was not a passing fancy for me. Im a good skater, I insisted. My father made a condescending comment like, Youre not that good, or Yes, yes, Im sure youre good. Because my fathers work occupied most of his time, he may not have been aware that I had been skating for several years. My father lived in the real world of hard work and inconsistent luck. He did not consider skating more than childs play. Even if he watched me skate, he would not be able to evaluate what he saw. Considering my entirely self-taught situation, I thought I possessed an impressive repertoire, which was worthy of expansion. For weeks I rehearsed how I would confront my father to ask for lessons. While my mother was at work, I would find the perfect moment to broach the subject. If she were not around, he would listen to me. We could discuss my goals like adults; the way we discussed other topics. I pictured my father sitting down with me at the kitchen table, perhaps writing out a list, as he did when making any important decision. We might even consider a budget or commuting schedule. If all went according to plan, he would reach over to the phone on the kitchen counter and dial the number for the roller rink. Then I would have an opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a legitimate skater.

Athletes are given the option to compete in artistic events and speed events. In addition to the choice of sport, athletes may choose to use in-line or quad skates, depending on their strengths. As in all Special Olympics Sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to the athletes' ability level, age and gender. For the artistic competition, men and women compete separately. The competition is further divided into four levels, each level progressively more difficult and requiring different elements. Speed events offer a variety of distances for all skill levels, as well as relay and slalom events. Roller skating was inaugurated at the 1987 World Games. That year the 22 participants were all United States athletes. In 1999, the roller skating competition boasted 108 athletes from 14 countries. Roller Skating Associations (RSAs) in the United States have been instrumental in the development and inclusion of Special Olympics athletes and coaches. These associations include: Roller Skating Rink Operators, Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America, Speed Coaches Association, Roller Hockey Coaches Association, and Roller Skating Supplies and Manufacturers. Roller skating is in the winter sports schedule for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Winter Games in December. The following events are sanctioned by Special Olympics Texas and are to be offered at all local, area and chapter competitions. The actual events scheduled and conducted at local, area and chapter competitions will be determined by a minimum number of entries in each event.

They are the first sports to be cut from the Games in 69 years and it means Regents Park, which was due to host them, will no longer be a 2012 venue. Squash and karate were initially nominated as their replacements but neither polled enough IOC members' votes to win a place at the Games. Rugby union sevens, golf and roller skating were also in the running. International Olympic Committee members went through seven rounds of voting to decide which two of the five sports should be put up for a vote to give them Olympic status. Squash and karate were chosen, but not enough of the IOC members wanted them to be included. It means the earliest they can now be introduced into the Games is 2016.

"We'll decide (about new entries) in 2005. Golf, rugby, squash and roller skating are knocking on the door," Rogge told the Corriere della Sera newspaper. "But for every novelty, we will need to give up a discipline. Nothing can be added. The golden numbers are 300 events, 28 sports, 10,400 athletes at most."
