Extractions: THE CREATIVE ATHLETE Issue 21 Changing Sports: What Are Your Options? The last issue of The Creative Athlete discussed switching sports. If you have reached this point, you have a number of options to consider. You can: 1. Switch to a different version of the same sport. Many sports offer a variety of ways to compete. Someone who has trained for one version of a sport can often take those skills and successfully apply them to another version. Examples: Cathy Turner quit speed skating in 1980 when she failed to make the Olympic team. In 1988 she returned, focusing on short track skating. Not only was this version of the sport less grueling for her than long track, but it became an Olympic sport in 1992, thus giving her another chance to make the team. Turner went on to win two medals, a silver and a gold, in Albertville in 1992, and also a gold and a bronze at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics. Eric Flaim is another long track speed skater who switched to short track. He won a silver medal in the long track 1,500 meter event at the 1988 Calgary Olympics and then in 1993 set a world record in the short track 1,500 meters. At the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics he won a silver medal in the 5,000 short track relay. He is the only man to have won Olympic medals in both long track and short track speedskating.

If you don't know what I'm talking about at all, there's a great wikipedia article about inline speed skating. If you don't feel like reading the article, the main thing to note is that inline speed skating is done on skates with wheels, NOT on ice skates. Also, see below for a helpful description of roller speedskating taken from Derek Parra's autobiography, Reflections in the Ice.

ADVERTISEMENT It's not as if he's going to sneak up on anybody, after all, so there's no sense in mincing words. Hedrick's goals aren't going to change, and neither has his determination to reach them. "Anything less than a gold medal will be failure for me," he said. "With the improvement I've made over the last two years, I wouldn't be happy with anything less." So there he is, poised by his own choice on the precarious perch of high expectations. But why should he need an exit strategy? After less than three years in the sport, Hedrick, 27, of Spring already is one of the best in the world.

That's one of the scenarios being contemplated by the International Olympic Committee as it considers possible new sports for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece. The IOC said Thursday it has received requests from more than a dozen recognized sports federations to be added to the Olympic program in Athens. The list includes parachuting, billiards, underwater swimming, roller skating and surfing. There are also several sports that have been lobbying for years: golf, ballroom dancing, bowling, rugby, squash and racquetball. And then there's the sport that is considered the favorite for becoming a new medal event in Athens: water skiing.
