Roller Sports Proposes a Short Program of Outdoor Speed Skating (Part 2) Figure skating was rejected because the Olympic Committee has indicated that it prefers sports in which there are clear cut winners, Wahlig said. "They are looking for sports where the person who comes across the line first is the winner, not subjective sports." The Olympics has been stung by criticism in recent years over controversies in which judges in gymnastics and ice figure skating were accused of playing favorites. Little Subjectivity in Roller Proposal The four events proposed by the roller federation don't leave much room for subjectivity. The 300 meter event is a time trial. Each skater would race alone against the clock, similar to a skier in a downhill race. The 500 meter race would be conducted in heats of about six skaters each, depending on the width of the racecourse. Top skaters in each heat would advance to the semifinals and then the finals.

Extractions: In 1984 Derek began speed roller-skating and by 1996 he had become the most decorated athlete in the history of the sport. As an inliner he was a three-time national champion two-time overall World Champion, two-time World record holder (1500m and 42K) and earned eighteen individual gold medals. He was the most decorated athlete at the 1995 Pan-Am Games winning 5 golds, 2 silver and a bronze medal. His award collection include everything but an Olympic Medal. Unfortunately for Derek, because inline skating is not an Olympic sport, roller-skating would never provide him with a chance to win that medal. So in 1996, at 25 years old, an age when most skaters begin to think of retiring, Derek decided to switch from inline to ice skates to chase after that medal. Just two years later, he proved to the speed skating world that his medal pursuit was for real when he earned a spot on the 1998 US Olympic Team. Today, he is a two-time US National All-round Champion, holder of two American records, and the reigning North American Champion. He has set his sights on completing his medal collection next February at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games.

Extractions: Special to the Chicago Sun-Times , January 25, 2005 MILWAUKEE No American man has participated in more than four Olympic speedskating events since Eric Heiden's historic five-gold Games in 1980. No one has tried to skate both long-track and short-track events since short-track joined the Olympic schedule in 1988. No African American has competed in an Olympic long-track event. Imagine being the skater trying to accomplish all that. Imagine being Shani Davis. Davis is a 22-year-old Chicago native who quiets the skeptics on a daily basis. I don't like getting caught up in the hype," Davis said. You lose focus if you're chasing someone else's accomplishments. Heiden and Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps were great athletes and had great goals and accomplishments. What I do is skate, and what I want to do is be competitive." Davis won his third all-around title Dec. 22 in the U.S. long-track nationals at the Pettit National Ice Center, winning two of the four events and finishing second in the others. In the sprint division, Davis took the overall silver, finishing no lower than fourth in any of the four races. In eight skates over five days, he set two track records, one of them erasing 1998 Olympic gold medalist Adne Sondral of Norway from the record book.
