This year, the theme is Women and Sports - Champions Forever! Today, more than ever before, girls and women can participate in all kinds of sports and physical activities! You don't have to look very far to find examples of women who are sport champions. Who can forget the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team's gold medal victory after an exciting match against their American rivals at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City? Believe it or not, not too long ago, running shoes and playing fields were for boys and men only. Girls and women were not allowed to participate in sport activities! Over the years, they had to work really hard to get into the game and play the sports that we take for granted today. A real obstacle race...
Harlick Skating Boots : About : History when American BalletMaster Jackson Haines treated Ice and roller skating as These are only some of the reasons that Coaches recommend and olympic, http://www.harlick.com/about/index.php
Extractions: Suggested Links Harlick History Home About : History The year was 1935, Oscar Johnson and Eddie and Roy Shipstad were readying the debut of their ice-skating road show, Sonja Henie was putting the finishing touches on her Madison Square Garden ice show, indoor ice rinks and dazzling ice carnivals had spread across the country. In San Francisco, home of Shipstad and Johnson, Louis Harlick, a Custom Footwear Maker (English Riding Boots, Ballet Shoes, Orthopedic Shoes) from Russia, was making his first pair of Custom Skating Boots. Harlick Skating Boots Began. Ever since the 1860's, when American Ballet-Master Jackson Haines treated Ice and Roller Skating as an art form and successfully took his Balletic Skating to several European capitals, skating had moved from a pleasant pastime to a year round sport. By the turn of the century, ice skating was professional - and very popular with the public. What hadn't kept pace with skatings popularity was the Quality of the equipment being used. Sure, wooden skates and iron skates had given way to steel skates. But these blades - or rollers - were often strapped or clamped on to street shoes or boots used for other purposes. It was for that reason that skaters turned to professional custom footwear craftsmen, men like Louis Harlick, to design and build for them fully integrated Skating Boots that not only fit properly but were constructed to withstand the physical pressures and performance demands of Skating. That's exactly what Harlick did for Skaters such as Skippy and Merrill Baxter, Dick Button, Carol Heiss, Hayes and Andrew Jenkins, Richard Dwyer and many others including Olympic, World and National Champions.

World Games 2005 - History event for sports (and/or disciplines of sports) not included in the programmeof the olympic Games. International roller skating Federation (FIRS) http://www.worldgames2005.de/en/geschichte/
Extractions: In 1980 a group of 12 International Sports Federations decided to join forces by forming the World Games Council, later to be renamed the International World Games Association (IWGA). The founding meeting was chaired by IOC Executive Board Member Dr. Un Youg Kim, who is also the President of the International Taekwondo Federation. The purpose of the new organization was to create a multisport event for sports (and/or disciplines of sports) not included in the programme of the Olympic Games. This aimed at, among other things, creating more exposure in the media and increased interest from spectators, which would assist the Federations in developing their sports. This initiative came during an era when international sports, including the Olympic Games, were yet to become the great television success - and thus the sponsoring venture - they are today. The 12 International Sports Federations mentioned were: International Badminton Federation (IBF) International Baseball Federation (AINBA) International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB) International Bowling Federation (FIQ) International Casting Federation (ICF) International Softball Federation (ISF) World Union of Karate-do Organization (WUKO) International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) International Roller Skating Federation (FIRS) World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) World Water Ski Union (WWSU) Now about 20 years later, Badminton, Baseball, Softball, and Teakwondo are no longer involved in the IWGA and the World Games as they are now - provisionally or otherwise - included in the programme of the Olympic Games. In the meantime also other sports, Beach Volleyball, Triathlon, Women's Waterpolo, Women's Weightlifting and individual trampolining, were once included in the programme for the World Games event(s) but are now also part of the Olympic Games.

Extractions: RecFacts 525: Canada's Pan Am Games History The first Pan American Games were held in 1951, but their history goes back two decades earlier. In 1932, the Mexican delegation to the Los Angeles Olympics proposed the formation of an organization to promote amateur sport in the Americas. The idea developed and led to the first Pan American Sports Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentia in 1940. The 16 countries represented at the meeting formed the Pan American Sports Committee. They also agreed to hold the first Pan American Games in 1942 in Buenos Aires, but World War Two forced their postponement. The idea stayed alive, and at the 1948 Olympics in London, a second congress was held, renewing the commitment to hold the Games. The first Pan American Games opened on February 25, 1952 in Buenos Aires with 2,513 athletes from 22 participating countries. The organization governing the Games was renamed the Pan American Sports Organization in 1955, and is currently made up of 42 National Olympic Committees in the Americas. PASO is headquartered in Mexico City, and its official languages are Spanish and English. Its emblem is a torch superimposed over five concentric circles. At least one of the colours of the circles (yellow, green, white, red and blue) appears on every national flag in the Americas. PASO's motto "America, Esprito, Sport, Fraternite" incorporates four of the languages in common use in the Americanas: Spanish, Portugese, English and French.
Extractions: KEARNS, Utah Orlando speed skater Derek Parra glided into Olympic history again Tuesday by winning a gold medal and setting a world record in the 1,500-meters race at the Utah Olympic Oval. Watched by 27 members of his family and friends gathered to share the moment, Parra, with tears running down his cheeks, grabbed an American flag and punched his fists in the air. There was so much to celebrate: Parra won in a world-record time of 1 minute, 43.95 seconds, crushing the pre-Olympic record of 1:45.20 held by South Korea's Lee Kyu-hyuk. He becomes the first Mexican-American to win gold in the Winter Olympics (after winning a silver in the 5,000-meter race Feb. 9). He also becomes the first U.S. male speed skater to win two medals in a Winter Olympics since Eric Heiden in 1980. And he's not quite finished. Parra will lace up his skates again for the 10,000-meter race Friday. He hopes to catch a break from his boss at a neighboring Home Depot, where Parra works as part of an Olympic job program "Maybe I'll get moved to lumber now," he said. "Someone did say I came out of the woodwork.

Extractions: Derek Parra Derek grew up in San Bernardino, CA, about an hour southeast of LA. It was there that he spent his childhood in this predominantly Hispanic, economically strained neighborhood. His parents split up when he was very young, and he and his brother were raised by their father, Gilbert, a corrections worker. Early on, Derek was very accustomed to not having. In early high school, he and his brother (Gilbert jr.) took to roller skating at the local Stardust Roller Rink. The routine became $4 from his Dad, and a $3.75 admission feed"aving Derek just 25 cents of pocket money for a three hour roller skating session. Part of the rink's nightly program was to hold two-lap races. The winner's prize was a Coke ticket. It was primarily out of need to quench his own thirst that Derek began a lifetime of speed skating. It wasn't long before he had a pocket full of Coke tickets as well as the attention of the rink managers, George and Virginia Cottone. The Cottone's also happened to coach the rink's speed skating team. Derek was on his way. Perhaps because of his size (5'4", 140lb) Derek was accustomed to having to try harder to keep up, so his work ethic was there from the very beginning. His coach mentored him and pushed him along, introducing him to organized roller skate racing and coaching him through the ranks. Many a time Derek would skate home from the rink (about 6 miles), often well after midnight, because he had no other transportation but was unwilling to give up skating.

And I kept ending up on my backside. My parents were a little surprised I was so awful." But in the space of time it took Pat and Jack Lipinski to wander off for a cup of hot chocolate that day, their miniature daughter had found her skating legs and discovered what would become her life's work.

Extractions: Dear friends, The I.O.C. Session in Singapore was a real important step for us, we knew exactly how difficult it would have been for us to set up a valuable candidature and a presentation of our sport in such a short time, yet it was utterly important to be visible, and not to miss this uncomparable chance. We knew we had to put together a team in power of bringing roller sports up to becoming an olympic sport. The new criteria implemented by the I.O.C. at Singapore pushed the I.O.C. itself to a self criticism, it was in fact not one but two sports dropping the olympic programme, and this is giving us a strong sign. From now on judgement shall come on the work carried out: the time for granted rights is over. Comte Jacques Rogge, The I.O.C. President himself, (as you can see from the attached letter), underlines - just a few days away from the Session - that the match is not over, our sport shall be once again evaluated in the I.O.C. Session determining the 2016 Olympic programme.
