In 1996, Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, commissioned the Brampton, Ontario, company to supply three robotically animated Triceratops for an outdoor exhibit based on the blockbuster movie Jurassic Park . According to the park designer's plan, people would never be more than 2 meters away, so these dinobots had to look, feel, and act like real animals. By stretching a silicone and fiberglass shell over a robotic skeleton, the artist/engineering team managed to create a stunningly realistic illusion of a living, breathing dinosaur.

    Extractions: National Robotics Engineering Consortium (NERC) Trip: On Wednesday, March 17th, La Roche College Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Chapter organized a trip to the National Robotics Engineering Consortium (NREC) . Upon arrival at NREC, students of LRC were given a short presentation about the history of robotics. The presentation was conducted in a walk in the areas that NREC uses for the necessary testing of their robots before they are put to function. It’s worth noting that the NREC Facility is only 10 minutes away from the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and it covers a field of 100,000 square foot. This facility represents the home to a number of projects which are done by different scientists, engineers and graduate students. These projects consist mainly of the creation of robots for specific governmental and other commercial/civilian needs. It should not surprise you that NREC is home of robots that includes the ones that mows the lawn to the ones that handle the highly dangerous radioactive material. In particular, Intel is helping researchers create small, sophisticated mobile robots that can act as gateways into wireless sensor networks. This is a new venture that is focused on intelligent mobile robots robots that are used in flexible environments, not automated toolsets in fixed locations. For example, Intel-based mobile robots will be used at the James Reserve by the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) to map terrain and monitor habitats. Intel silicon for robotics applications is also being used by researchers, such as professor Tucker Balch at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Professor Balch is exploring how robots can organize and perform like social insects, such as bees and ants.
