Sea Grant News Media Center - Rhode Island - Oil Spill rhode island Oil Spill Threatens Key Ecological Areas Expert Scientific Sources Thomas M. Leschine, Sea Grant Researcher, school of Marine Affairs, http://www.seagrantnews.org/news/oilspill.html
Extractions: Editor's Note: The following people can offer expert comments and viewpoints from a scientific basis for issues surrounding the growing ecological disaster resulting from the spill of nearly 1,000,000 gallons of heating oil along Rhode Island's southern coast this past weekend from the barge, The North Cape. Areas of Research / Media Topics: Biotechnology; Oceanography; Ecology; Pollutants, toxic contaminants; Education - environment and marine; Seafood safety; Fisheries; Water quality; New technologies; Physiological ecology of marine animals; Developmental and energetic strategies of marine animals; Physiological effects of pollutants on marine animals; Invertebrate nutrition; Effects of toxic chemicals on the marine environment; Hazards of dredged material disposal in the marine environment. McDowell Comments: "One good thing about this spill is that the concentration of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons is less in a refined oil such as heating oil, than in crude oil such as spilled in Alaska. Therefore many of the compounds will not produce decades-long effects. The bad news is that refined products such heating oil are much more toxic in the short term. The Rhode Island spill is comparable in volume to similar heating oil spill in West Falmouth in September, 1969. The concern here, as was the case then, is the proximity of the spill to the shoreline and coastal habitats.

Extractions: Community-Based School Planning: If Not Now, When? by Steven Bingler Throughout the country, elementary and high school districts are spending unprecedented amounts of money renovating existing school facilities and building new ones. In 2001 alone, roughly $27 billion worth of K-12 construction projects were approved and funded a trend that is likely to continue for several years out. Using a data-driven methodology, this engagement model is growing in popularity as an effective tool for authentic and autonomous large-group decision-making. In this model, elected officials receive clear input and direction about their constituents' wants and needs. As important, they obtain community ownership and buy-in. Although the engagement model is sometimes construed as being more time-consuming than traditional processes, the outcomes are well worth the added effort. Through the open dialogue that is integral to this process, issues are more thoroughly reviewed and resolved. Protracted infighting, conflict, and debate are often avoided. Another benefit from broad-based community engagement is that recommendations are often more systemic, incorporating a broad range of the community's physical, cultural, social, economic, organizational, and educational assets into more elegant, cohesive, and efficient solutions.
