Extractions: Joseph T. Scott. "Rhode Island." From United States Gazetteer This is one of the earliest American maps of Rhode Island, from the first American gazetteer. Joseph T. Scott, a Philadelphia engraver and publisher, issued his gazetteer during the early days of American cartography, and the maps of the individual states and territories are very good. Scott included much detail of rivers, counties, roads, and towns. This map of Rhode Island shows fine information of the road system throughout the state, with indications of settlements including Providence, E. Greenwich, and Newport. As an early example of American cartography and an fascinating document of Rhode Island history, this is a gem. Harding Harris. "Rhode-Island and Connecticut." From Jedidiah Morse's The American Universal Geography An early American map of Rhode Island and Connecticut issued in Boston in 1796. This map was from Jedidiah Morse's Geography , one of the first American publications of its kind. Morse, the father of Samuel F.B. Morse, established himself in the 1780s as one of the leading producers of American maps. The topography of the state is denoted, with rivers, roads, counties, towns, and other features indicated and named. One of only a few of the state issued in the eighteenth century.

Extractions: Amos Doolittle. "Connecticut From the best Authorities." From William Guthrie's New System of Modern Geography An important map of Connecticut from the American edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved . This atlas was issued in 1795 by Mathew Carey, a seminal figure in early American cartographic publishing. Carey, an Irish immigrant, established the first American specialized cartographic publishing firm. He set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving, printing, and coloring his maps, utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end. Carey is important, then, not only for the excellent maps he produced, but for his setting the pattern for American map publishing, to be followed by the likes of John Melish and Henry S. Tanner. This map of Connecticut is a fine example of from Carey's atlas. It is a slightly revised version of the map that was first issued the year before (it can be identified by the addition of the reference to Carey's atlas). Topographical information is neatly portrayed, including towns, rivers, mountains, and roads. The counties and townships are indicated and named. The map contains two unusual and interesting features. Along the western border is a narrow strip between Connecticut and New York, entitled "Oblong," which was an area of dispute between the states. In the top left corner of the map is the label "State of Vermont," in an area which is actually part of Massachusetts. Also of great interest is the finely etched title cartouche, by Amos Doolittle. One of the best and earliest maps of the state.

(The U.S. Congress appropriated $18,000 for the building of a lighthouse at the northern tip of Conanicut Island in 1884 to help mariners around the dangerous point. The lighthouse, a square tower attached to a six-room house, was finished in 1886.)
