Extractions: One of the missions of the RI State Energy Office is to offer good and sound information on energy to all Rhode Islanders. To that end, the RISEO has been a member of the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) since 1991. The NEED Project has been instrumental in helping the Energy Office achieve its goals of providing quality energy education materials to K-12 schools. The mission of the NEED Project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs. The NEED Project is dedicated to developing innovative energy education materials and training programs for teachers and students. Launched by Congressional Resolution in 1980, the NEED Program is now a dynamic force in more than 7,000 schools in 38 states. NEED is a 501c (3) non-profit education association funded by Federal and state government grants, corporate contributions, and local sponsors. The NEED Project's non-biased information on all aspects of energy, including production, consumption, and economic and environmental effects, gives students an understanding of the interrelationship between energy and the environment. More important, NEED's student-directed activities empower students to take active roles in educating their peers, families, and communities about energy issues and in identifying and solving problems unique to their communities. NEED's Energy Management for Schools program also allows many schools to participate in saving vital energy dollars for their districts. These new programs are correlated to the U.S. DOE EnergySmart Schools initiatives.

You will waste both your time and the grant-maker's if you submit a proposal that does not match the grantor's funding initiatives. The SchoolGrants focus is primarily schools within the United States. There are, however, often opportunities available that extend to our Canadian neighbors. Most of such opportunities are found on the Nationwide Opportunities pages. If you know of opportunities that are not listed on the SchoolGrants site, we would appreciate you letting me know about them! It is the SchoolGrants goal to provide as many opportunities as possible to benefit our Nation's children and their schools. This is only possible with your help and assistance.

Extractions: Priority 3: K-12 and Teacher Preparation Reform Key Initiatives (1999-2002) Transforming the Assessment and Teaching of Pre-service Teachers. The redesign of teacher education programs focuses on key areas of the content and nature of the curriculum, both in campus-based instruction and student-teaching placements. This work reflects a shift from an "inputs-based" model, where student readiness is judged largely by the courses they have taken, to a "proficiency and performance-based" approach where students must both complete necessary educational experiences and also demonstrate that they have acquired and can apply to the teaching of pre-12 students, the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to effectively, and at high levels, impact the learning of their students. The University of Rhode Island/Holmes and Urban Partnership Network. This partnership, involving schools throughout Rhode Island, has a particular focus on middle-level education but will include all levels of K-12 education when fully implemented. This effort seeks to provide for a network of "professional develop districts" as intensive placements for student teachers, and the enhancement and mentoring of young teachers.
