"The Role of Public Policies in Reducing Mental Health Status Disparities for People of Color." Health Affairs This essay is directed at policymakers as a way of describing how public policies have the potential for addressing racial disparities in mental health outcomes for racial minority groups. The authors suggest that public policies eliminate the gaps in social conditions between minorities and Whites, which could reduce mental health disparities. They explain how Section 8 housing, which improves access to housing, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1994, which improves educational opportunities, and Earned Income Tax Credit, which reduces the impact of poverty have each shown great improvements in the experiences and mental health status of minorities. The authors conclude that the success of these programs in improving the social conditions of people of color could directly reduce the mental health disparities between racial minorities and Whites. This device is based on the arms of Gloucester, England, which uses three red chevrons. The arms of the ancient family of Clare, who were Earls of Gloucester, made the distinction by the addition of ten torteaux ["roundels" or half-circles]. In Glocester's arms the torteaux have been changed to three arrowheads to signify that Glocester, Rhode Island is in America."

Although such facts are important for students to know, activity-based learning such as those in Operation RubyThroat may be more effective in teaching, learning, and retention than mere memorization. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is an ideal topic for discussion in geography because it breeds, migrates through, or spends the winter in all the countries of North and Central America. While learning about the natural history of this diminutive bird, students can also learn a great deal about geography. We hope you'll want to share your original hummingbird geography work through publication on Operation RubyThroat . If so, contact

MA 24 teachers from six states - California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Washington will venture to the vast wetlands of Brazils Pantanal and to the Skagit River watershed of Washington this summer to participate in conservation research projects as part of a $75,000 grant award Earthwatch Institute has received from National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGSEF). Earthwatchs "Strengthening Geography in Schools through Conservation Field Work and Collaboration" is strategically designed to address the lack of geographic knowledge among students in the United States. "This innovative project will help students become stewards of our natural and cultural resources, said Barbara Chow, Executive Director of the Societys Education Foundation. Giving these teachers a first-hand look at the realities of conservation issues will enliven their teaching. The project will send 24 geography/science educators to conservation projects in the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil and the Skagit River watershed in Washington State. Through subsequent workshops and websites, these teachers expect to reach another 2,400 K-12 teachers and 240,000 students with geography and conservation lessons linking field research to local environmental issues.
Extractions: Winter 2004/2005 Search ArcNews Bringing Together Geography, Environmental Concerns, the Outdoors, and Science The Girl Scouts' work led to the creation of the first GIS badge (see above) in the state of Rhode Island. The scouting system is a perfect place to introduce GIS and GPS technology to young girls who might not be otherwise exposed to its importance. The technology brings together the Girl Scouts' core themes of geography, the environment, outdoors, and science, which become more crucial as society develops under the influence of technology. Girl Scouts of America was founded in 1912 with the purpose to help girls everywhere build character and gain skills for success in the real world. Since that time, the organization has molded itself to the needs and requirements of the changing world. With its purpose of inspiring girls and instilling strong values, leadership abilities, social conscience, and insight about their self-worth, it is inevitable that teaching technology has become an important part of the Girl Scouts' goals. "This is especially important in a time when technology is an intrinsic part of society, yet there continues to be fewer women in technology-based fields than men," says Peter August, professor of natural resource science at the University of Rhode Island. "To combat this problem, it is important to teach girls the value of technology at an early age."
