More subscriber services Environmental Journal by Peter Lord: Author of book on stripers to speak on restoration efforts 01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, July 17, 2005 One of the most highly touted and successful fish restoration efforts ever undertaken has brought striped bass back in abundance on the East Coast. Dick Russell, a successful author and conservation activist, has written a book about the restoration efforts called Striper Wars, and on Aug. 4 he plans to give a presentation and sign books. Russell's talk will be at 7 p.m. at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's Environmental Education Center, in Bristol. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Call (401) 245-7500, ext. 18. For his efforts on behalf of stripers, Russell was given the Chevron Conservation Award in 1988. A longtime sportfisherman, Russell spent three years fighting for stronger regulations to protect stripers. He organized a national conference in Washington and made numerous radio and television appearances. Russell's last book, Eye of the Whale, followed the migration of gray whales from Mexico's Baja peninsula to northern Alaska and Siberia. It was named the Best Book of 2001 by the Los Angeles Times.

In Rhode Island, a weekly random sampling of charter fishing boat captains will be asked to report their fishing effort from the previous week, such as number of trips, number of anglers, targeted species, area fished and number of fish caught. In addition, an observer will collect catch and discard data on selected large party boat trips.

A risk assessment form is used to record the presence or absence of nutritional, medical, and psychosocial factors that may affect the pregnancy. Risk factors are assessed at the initial prenatal visit and again during the second and third trimesters of the pregnancy. Information on domestic violence has been collected since June 1993. In addition to risk factor information, the database contains information on the woman's age, education, race/ethnicity, marital status, town of residence, and insurance carrier.
