When erected (17 Feb., 1872) it included also that portion of south-eastern Massachusetts which has since 14 March, 1904, been set off as the Diocese of Fall River (q. v.). It thus embraces an entire state, the majority of whose population is Roman Catholic (State Census, 1905). The city of Providence was the residence of the Bishop of Hartford from the establishment of that see in 1844 (see HARTFORD, DIOCESE OF). In 1847 a Brief authorizing this transfer of residence was obtained from the Propaganda. The first appearance of Roman Catholic worship in the colony of Rhode Island was in the latter part of 1780, when the French army under Rochambeau encamped at Newport and Providence. It is known that there were several chaplains with the army who often said Mass publicly. Shortly afterwards (Feb., 1783) the colonial legislature repealed the act disfranchising Roman Catholics . Extractions: Decline and Resurrection By Michael Smith The academies of that era were more akin to modern-day boarding schools and provided an education roughly analogous to the middle and high schools of today. While instruction at private academies was no substitute for post-secondary instruction, in an era when census data show that just two percent of high school age students actually earned a diploma, graduates of such institutions were considered highly educated indeed. Both of the 19th century academies are well worth visiting, as the respective campuses retain much of their former charm and it is not difficult to imagine them as they were in their heyday as the centers for teacher education in Rhode Island. The author gratefully acknowledges Marlene Lopes, Special Collections Librarian, for her assistance with research for the Sesquicentennial Memories series. Extractions: Contact us today to get help for struggling teens With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind.

Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots.

This teaching experience inspired me to learn more about second language acquisition. In August of 1996, I became certified as an ESL Specialist. After taking some time off to be with my children, I returned to work in the public schools as an ESL teacher in March of 2000. In January of 2001, I joined the ESL program in North Kingstown. In January of 2002, I completed my Masters Degree at Rhode Island College in Teaching English as a Second Language.
