Extractions: In many American households, homework is a big problem. Teachers often load up students with far more of it than I recall from my own prehistoric school career. And parents, squeezed for time by dual careers and rusty because of rapidly changing curricula, find it is hard to help. Also, today's students often have so many after-school activities that even with the best work ethic, it is a struggle to get through hours of homework and still get enough sleep before the absurdly early start time at many high schools. Taking note of this daily homework battle, Microsoft has decided to help or at least to see whether it can make some money by addressing the problem. The software colossus has just introduced Microsoft Student 2006, designed to make it easier for middle-school and high-school students to attack homework efficiently by gathering homework resources in one place on the computer. Microsoft Student, which runs only on PCs equipped with DVD drives and Windows 2000 or Windows XP, is priced at $100, though it is less expensive at places such as Amazon.com, which sells it for $80.

Extractions: The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards The regiment is the most senior in the British Army, so it has a long and illustrious history. In 1656 King Charles II, in exile after the execution of his father, raised a regiment from his loyal exiles at Bruges, in Flanders. It was called "The Royal Regiment of Guards". On the King's return to his throne in 1660, he disbanded the old Parliamentarian Army and commissioned another Regiment of twelve companies for his personal protection. The first of these was called the King's Company. In 1664 the Royal Regiment of Guards was recalled from Flanders and merged with the King's Company to form the "King's Regiment of Foot Guards." By 1665 the Regiment had become the "First Regiment of Foot Guards," The Regiment has fought in almost every major campaign of the British Army since the 1660s. During the 17th Century it served in Morocco and in the naval wars against the Dutch and later played a distinguished role under the Duke of Marlborough, being present at his brilliant victories of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet.

Extractions: by Susan Salter In an October 2003 article in Time magazine, a working mother described what awaits her, and her daughter, when school lets out: "Nightly reading and math problems, spelling and handwriting homework due each Friday and a mix of other assignments to be turned in at the end of each month." The daughter was in kindergarten. Are today's K-12 students - and, increasingly, their parents - overburdened by homework? That highly debated topic has grown in the American consciousness over the past few years due in part to such developments as the No Child Left Behind legislation and two widely reported (and conflicting) studies on how much time students must actually devote to homework. Certainly you'd be hard-pressed to find a child who enjoys doing assignments after six hours a day in school - or perhaps a teacher who enjoys evaluating all that extra work. With today's standardized tests providing the impetus, homework has evolved from primarily book-based studies of decades past to a more diverse regimen involving everything from oral reports and dioramas for younger children to PowerPoint presentations for their older peers. At the same time, homework must compete with extracurriculars like sports and music, social activities, part-time jobs and, for many students, household responsibilities like caring for younger siblings.
