As the state's economy gradually diversified, the suburbs grew, people migrated to Texas from other states, and religious conservatives became more involved in politics, the natural Republican base in the state grew. It was only a matter of time before Republican activists and candidates overcame the entrenched Democrats whose own electoral base was steadily eroding. Republican fortunes were foreshadowed in the 1952 and 1956, when conservative Democrats led by then-governor Allen Shivers engineered Democratic support for Republican presidential candidate Dwight Eisenhower. Recent numbers from the Highway Patrol show a 55% decline in the number of meth incidents (August of 2004 v. August 2005). This comparison is from the first available reporting since the comprehensive bill went into effect July 2005. According to the Highway Patrol, the new legislation is also assisting in identifying potential meth cooks because pharmacies are now required to maintain purchase logs and make them available for inspection to law enforcement officers. Online NewsHour | Vote 2004 |Politics 101 | Third Parties But, despite an active political presence, only two parties the Democrats and republicans Analysts favor the republican or Democratic party to win, http://www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2004/politics101/politics101_thirdparties.html
Extractions: The United States is home to more than 54 political parties 37 of which have had candidates run for the presidency. But, despite an active political presence, only two parties the Democrats and Republicans dominate the modern American political process, between them fielding all of the candidates that have become president since the mid-1800s. Why, in a democracy, do only two parties dominate? What of the 52 other parties, many of which have contributed ideas and policies that have become mainstays of American political life and law? The answer, according to historians and scholars, is the political process that has relegated third parties to the sidelines and the nature of the parties themselves. The Green Party, Reform Party, Libertarians, Constitution Party and Natural Law Party represent the most active third parties currently in the United States. All of these parties have fielded presidential candidates in the last several elections. Ralph Nader, an independent candidate in the 2004 presidential race, made his name as a consumer advocate and as the two-time presidential nominee of the Green Party. As the Green Party candidate in 2000, he gained more than 2 million votes, coming in third behind Al Gore and George W. Bush. But controversy marred the Green Party accomplishment. Democrats blamed Nader for causing Gore's defeat by siphoning off votes simply by his presence in the race.

The Associated Press asked the Year 2000 Democratic and Republican presidential candidates for their position on school prayer. On 2000-OCT-9, they published the responses from Texas Governor George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore. Their beliefs are believed to reflect their parties' positions. " I support voluntary, student-led prayer and am committed to the First Amendment principles of religious freedom, tolerance, and diversity. Whether Mormon, Methodist, or Muslim, students in America should be able to participate in their constitutional free exercise of religion. I believe it is wrong to forcefully expunge any mention of religion, or dilute its impact and importance, when discussing world affairs. Religion is a personal, private matter and parents, not public school officials, should decide their children's religious training. We should not have teacher-led prayers in public schools, and school officials should never favor one religion over another, or favor religion over no religion (or vice versa). I also believe that schools should not restrict students' religious liberties. The free exercise of faith is the fundamental right of every American, and that right doesn't stop at the schoolhouse door. Comment: He supports "
