Extractions: AND SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING ABSTRACT The Amigos two-way bilingual education program began as a collaborative effort between the Cambridge (Massachusetts) Public Schools' departments of desegregation and transitional bilingual education. Parents, teachers, administrators, and members of the community formed a committee to explore the possibility of developing a program that would combine the best features of transitional bilingual education (for limited-English-proficient students) and language immersion education (for native English speakers). The committee sought a way to end the isolation of language minority students from the rest of the school and to provide language majority students with the opportunity to acquire proficiency in a second language. The Amigos program commenced in September 1986 and currently serves close to 250 public school students, half of whom are from Spanish speaking homes, the other half of whom are from English-speaking homes. Half of their instruction is provided in Spanish, the other had in English.

Extractions: Information Literacy Blog Helping Your Child with Science. ERIC Digest. by Haury, David L. - Milbourne, Linda A. "Being "scientific" involves being curious, asking how things happen, and learning how to find the answers. Curiosity is natural to children, but they need help understanding how to make sense of what they see. All we need is a willingness to observe and learn with them, and, above all, to make an effort and take the time to nurture their natural curiosity." http://www.pmct.org/science.html Guidelines and resources presented here are intended to help willing parents nurture interest and success in science among their children. WHAT ARE CHILDREN LEARNING IN SCIENCE? Each school has its own science program and expectations, but most are aligned with state curriculum frameworks or guidelines that are, in turn, strongly influenced by national standards. "National Standards for Science Education" were developed by the National Research Council (see http://www.nas.edu/nrc/). The "Standards" present unifying concepts and processes that pertain to science at all grade levels, as well as specific content standards at each grade range for (a) science as inquiry, (b) life science, (c) physical science, (d) earth and space science, (e) science and technology, (f) science in personal and social perspectives, and (g) history and nature of science. These standards andothers are summarized online in "The McREL Standards Database" (see http://www.mcrel.org/standards-benchmarks/); select "Table of Contents," then "Science."

This is mainly because of the tedious and mind-numbing chores of data mining and composition. Additionally, as knowledge multiplies every 5-10 years, few parents and teachers are able to keep up. Similar to the Encarta, MS Student's Web Companion obtains search results from all the major search engines without launching any additional applications (like a browser). Content from both the Encyclopedia (the full Encarta encyclopedia is built into MS Student) and the Web is presented side by side. This augmentation explicitly adopts the Internet and incorporates it as an important source of reference - as 80% of students have already done.
