Site Map Revised 6/94, Approved 10/25/94 by the Religion Department with few changes yet to be added General Collecting Guidelines Subjects And Collecting Levels Definition of Collecting Levels As a humanistic discipline, the study of Religion aims to improve human understanding of the history, traditions, literature, and social structures of a broad spectrum of religious cultures and traditions. The Religion major at Oberlin is designed to "serve as a focus of a liberal arts education for the general student and as a pre-professional foundation for those pursuing the study of Religion beyond the baccalaureate degree." (Oberlin College Course Catalog 1993-94, p. 239) The major consists of 27 hours of course work within the department. Current departmental emphases are on the study of works by major religious figures and thinkers and the history, philosophy, archeology, politics, and sociology of Religion. The curriculum in Religion at Oberlin has nine areas of concentration: American Religious History, Christian History, East Asian Religions, Ethics, Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, Islam, Judaism, Modern Religious Thought, and South Asian Religions. Courses in Religion are also cross-listed with other programs of study in the College such as Archeological Studies, East Asian Studies, Judaic and Near Eastern Studies, and Women's Studies. Since library collections in these interdisciplinary fields also support the study of Reli-gion, this policy contains a number of cross-references to subject statements for these areas.

I do not necessarily endorse the views of the authors whose works you may find on these pages. As with books you might find in a library, use common sense and critical intelligence in evaluating any material you find on the Web. Particularly in situations of conflict, websites are often heavily biased towards one or another side. Don't make the mistake of one of last year's students who copied out large slabs of neo-Hindu hate propaganda against the Muslims into her essay without realising what she was doing. In any case, if you cite or use material from the Internet it should be properly referenced. The URL alone is not sufficient. For further information see How To Cite E-Text I have partially revised this page but haven't checked all the links yet so some may not work.

Please be patient. It's going to take awhile to make the conversion from web sites to a book. Nevertheless, the book manuscript is fairly readable right now.) [If you are not interested in science, you may prefer to go directly to PART I where you will find my narrative of the last 21 months of my five-year religious crisis. That crisis culminated in purgation and mystical union. The narrative is at Chapter 1, which immediately follows the Preface and the Table of Contents. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of PART I are all descriptive, narrative, and non technical.] Preface In 1962 I had what I believe was a sacred, ten hour, religious experience. This experience is known in the West as purgation culminating in mystical union (PMU). Later, my study of religions between 1962 and 1984 indicated that PMU is an experience central to most religions (see, in particular, stages 11 and 12 of Table I below). Therefore, I am hypothesizing that the experience of PMU is at the very essence or core of a general theory of religion (GTR). In order to follow up on the hypothesis given in the above paragraph, in 1984 I began a scientific analysis of my consciousness during the ten hour purgative stage of PMU. I conducted this analysis according to the scientific method: I recalled consciousness during the 1962 experience of PMU, using the causal loop diagraming technique from

Contrast with theism and supernaturalism in general, which hold that the material entities are not autonomous, but governed by an external agency outside nature. Metaphysical naturalism is one basis for rejecting the idea of a personal deity as described in various scriptures, and assuming the investigation of nature alone, and mistrusting revelation, as the key to understanding the whole affair. The session of Montreat Presbyterian Church has accused the General Assembly Council of a number of "delinquencies" in its response to the 2000 Peacemaking Conference where a Presbyterian minister said other religions provide valid paths to God. The Montreat session concluded that an Oct. 25 response by the council's executive committee to a similar complaint by the session of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas did not address the "delinquencies" or provide remedies. That response basically agreed with the theological assertion that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone but concluded that freedom of conscience allowed a Presbyterian minister to say otherwise at the Peacemaking Conference. to warn or bear witness against error in doctrine or immorality in practice in or outside the church by neglecting to correct the keynote address of the Rev. Dirk Ficca. [Ficca, who is executive director of an international inter-faith group that includes neo-pagan religions, asked at one point during his address, "What's the big deal about Jesus?"

" Rather than going to church, I attend a sweat lodge; rather than accepting bread and toast [sic] from the Holy Priest, I smoke a ceremonial pipe to come into Communion with the Great Spirit; and rather than kneeling with my hands placed together in prayer, I let sweetgrass be feathered over my entire being for spiritual cleansing and allow the smoke to carry my prayers into the heavens.
