Extractions: Since disabilities involving math can be so different, the effects they have on a person's development can be just as different. For instance, a person who has trouble processing language will face different challenges in math than a person who has difficulty with visual- spatial relationships. Another person with trouble remembering facts and keeping a sequence of steps in order will have yet a different set of math-related challenges to overcome. Early Childhood: Building a solid foundation in math involves many different skills. Young children with learning disabilities can have difficulty learning the meaning of numbers (number sense), trouble with tasks like sorting objects by shape, size or color; recognizing groups and patterns; and comparing and contrasting using concepts like smaller/bigger or taller/shorter. Learning to count, recognizing numbers and matching numbers with amounts can also be difficult for these children.

Extractions: If individuals with dyslexia have difficulties with literacy skills, they might also have problems with musical notation, even though they may have a good musical ear and a good sense of melody and harmony. In many families, the first chosen instrument is the piano. For the first year of lessons, all is well and the piano performances are enjoyed by all. Then there is a reluctance and finally a refusal to continue. Why? Frequently, the written form of music causes difficulties. A good musical ear and good musical sensitivity may have carried the child through the first year. Then the pieces get longer and sheets of printed music are needed. The music teacher and the parent may not have realized that no progress had been made in the understanding of the relationship between those printed notes and musical sounds.

Extractions: "One very prominent situation dyslexics face are self-esteem issues (Moragne). One may find themselves trying extremely hard academically, only to fail to meet their parents' goals. They are often chastised for what adults think is wrong-doing. In actuality, these problems cannot be corrected without the help of professionals. To boost self-esteem, dyslexics should set very mild goals. Becoming a world renowned athlete is not a worthy goal to try. Perhaps making the baseball team would be an achievable goal. Everyone in this world, dyslexic or not, likes the feeling of succeeding (Moragne 75). The more a dyslexic succeeds, the better he will feel about himself, hence the making of achievable goals."
