Don't be satisfied with your "regular" audience expand your expectations Read With Me Set aside the last 15 minutes of each school day and regularly invite parents, grandparents, neighbors, members of the community, to stop in your classroom/school and read with a child "Read with Me." Make the invitation public and often, and greet guests when they come and have a plan to match them up with a child without a lot of commotion. The key to any of these ideas is that the activity does not take place in a vacuum. Give it a lot of fanfare; invite the mayor, your state representatives, any local celebrities, and the general public. Announce it to the newspaper. Make the event one of great importance. List your event on your community web calendar.

One of the keys to successful acquisition of literacy is children's active participation in literacy activities. Children need to be actively involved in handling books and interacting with family members and teachers during reading time. Although the computer offers one alternative for assisting children and families with interactive literacy experiences, there are also many adaptations can be made to books and other print materials to insure that children are active participants in storybook reading. Children with disabilities as well as very young children who do not have the fine motor skills to turn pages can benefit from page turners, communication boards and aprons, and a book holder. Visual adaptations can also be made to make materials more interactive and appealing to young children. Page Turners Another adaptation can be made with velcro for page turning. Attach a small piece of velcro about mid-way down the page on the far right side. Attach a velcro band around the child's hand so that he/she can touch the page and pull the page over the next one. Small ponytail holders can be glued to the movable part of a book that has pop-up features. Children can then pull the holder to enjoy the pop-up part of the book.

It is intended to present readers with a very brief synopsis of selected articles that have recently appeared in leading journals in school psychology and related areas. Articles in the School Psychology Review are not included since readers of the Communiqué receive this journal. Coordination of the reviews for volume 31 is provided by Steve Landau, Co-Chair of the Research Committee. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of increased access to books and home rereading of passages presented in school on reading fluency, comprehension and motivation to read for native and non-native English-speaking students. The sample was comprised of first graders: 57 were native English speakers and 105 spoke English as a second language. The participating 16 classrooms were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (a) shared reading in a book-rich classroom with audiotapes for home re-reading; (b) shared reading in a book-rich classroom with home re-reading (no audiotapes); (c) shared reading in a book-rich classroom with no home component; and (d) typical reading instruction (control group). The authors examined the effects of the four literacy conditions and English-language proficiency on literacy achievement and reading motivation. Literacy achievement was assessed pre- and post-intervention using reading fluency, vocabulary and story retell measures. In addition, students reading motivation, literacy behavior and attitudes toward reading were measured through teacher and parent surveys and student self-report. Students in the book-rich classrooms scored significantly higher than control students on the story retell measure. The interaction between treatment condition and English proficiency was not significant. Students in the treatment groups, particularly those receiving the home component, showed increased motivation to read. The availability of audio models for home-based reading had beneficial effects particularly for non-native English speakers.
