Clearance Graphs are used to display information visually. They can show very quickly concepts that would need very lengthy written descriptions. Graphs take many forms. There are bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs. This project will show students how art can be combined with other subjects, in this case math, to produce graphs. Simple data collection (surveys) will be used in this project as well. Grade Levels Grades 3 through 8. Time Required Up to three class periods (45 - 60 minutes a period). Lesson Objectives To develop and promote an awareness of the uses of art materials and concepts in the creation of visual information charts and graphs. Math and simple data collection techniques will be used as well to produce the information needed for visual presentation. Procedure Use class discussion to determine the type of information that would be interesting to show in graph form. The example graph above shows how a class of 30 students responded in a survey that asked their favorite color from a list of six colors. Each student can create individual surveys. Create a survey form that lists choices for the data to be collected.

Extractions: SchoolNet Digital Collections Curriculum Units Unit Summaries The Authors Kim O'Halloran Lesson Overview Math Curriculum Topics Lesson 1 Students will be introduced to ratios by studying the proportions of the hand for the purpose of sketching lifelike features. Measurement Ratio and Proportion Data Collection and analysis Lesson 2 Students will practice using ratio and proportion by drawing and measuring the "nicest" rectangle they can visualize and comparing it to the golden rectangle. Students will try to verify golden rectangles in other works of art and devate whether or not the use of the golden rectangle is deliberate or not. Students will then come up with ideas on how the golden rectangle can be used to their advantage and create a pastel drawing involving the golden mean. Ratio and Proportion Measurement Data Analysis Lesson 3 Ratio and Proportion Measurement Estimation Data Collection and Analysis Lesson 4 Students will put their knowledge of ratio and proportion to the test as they design a 2-dimensional layout of a building that they will later draw and eventually model. Students will be encouraged to use the golden mean. Ratio and Proportion Area and Perimeter Measurement Drawing in 2-Dimensions Lesson 5 Students will draw prisms in 3-dimensions in preparation for a sketch of the building they designed in the previous lesson. They will break 3-dimensional geometric objects down into their nets as Durer had done, and they will construct 3-Dimensional objects from these nets.

I told them that they were to include their hands near their faces in the photos. The most hilarious thing is that I never told them what we were going to do with the photos. If I did tell them in advance that they were going to draw themselves, they would have been more inhibited. They really played the fool for these pictures and had a great time doing it.

The two lessons in this unit, Investigation of Ratios and Investigation of Proportions include pre-made sketches. Through the use of the sketch, students investigate what a ratio/proportion is, the key differences between them, the similarities, and how to calculate a ratio and a proportion. Both lessons are best taught through student-directed learning. Teachers should focus on student understanding of the transition from a visual to the concrete and vice versa for each lesson. LESSON ONE - Investigation of Ratios ONTARIO CURRICULUM Covered: In this lesson students manipulate a ratio line to formulate a ratio. By using a line that goes up to ten, students have a clear understanding of 2 out of 10. Many students understand the ratio line as a ruler where 10 represent 1 cm and each point in between represents a millimeter. By the end of this investigation students have a clear understanding of a ratios, how to write a ratio, and can visualize a ratio. This lesson gives students the necessary explanation and visuals that students require too understand ratios at the grade seven and eight level.
