Students are to take turns tossing 10 pennies towards the center of the cardboard box provided by the teacher. Using the worksheet provided, students should be recording the misses and successes of each other. When everyone is finished, students are then to calculate the ratio of hits to total shots. On a second worksheet, students are to choose two of the students in class and predict using their information, how many hits would be made if there were 20 shots taken, 50 shots, or 100 shots. Discuss with students their predictions and reasons. Explain the definition of a proportion. Demonstrate how to use a proportion to solve a problem like the above predictions that does not include guessing.
