A total of 15 distinct plant communities have been identified and these are the product of a combination of many diverse factors. As this is Krugers northernmost extremity, located 22°30 south of the equator, many tropical elements are present. Part of the region lies in a rain shadow, and Pafuri receives a meagre rainfall of just 362 millimetres a year, so many species from the arid west occur here. A number of rich plant communities coincide with significant areas of sand formed by river flood plains, the Mozambique coastal plain and sandstone formations, and the Luvuvhu River creates a corridor of riverine forest that harbours many forest-dwelling species.

A deadly bug infected a group of kakapo parrots ( Strigops habroptilus ) on the offshore islands of Codfish and Chalky. Before the infection, from a lethal strain of soil bacteria, there were only 86 kakapo left in the country. The Department of Conservation (DoC) has responded swiftly to the outbreak, by giving the remaining birds emergency antibiotic treatment. Young birds "The birds have either ingested or have been infected in some way with the erysipelas bacterium. It goes straight into the blood stream and causes blood poisoning," says Paul Jansen, who leads the kakapo team at the DoC. "The good news is that we know what it is and we have the right tools in place."

Napwell It found delaying ploughing until the spring increases the breeding success of several farmland bird species, some of which are classified as threatened. The study was carried out by scientists at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), using data collected by volunteers over a 10-year period. The BTO says increasing stubble land could halt the decline of some species. Numbers of each have fallen by more than 50% since 1977; studies have shown that changes in farming practice are largely responsible, particularly the adoption of winter crops, meaning that fields are ploughed in the autumn.

Links to Bird Records Committees Introduction The Trinidad and Tobago Rare Bird Committe (TTRBC) was established as an independent organisation governed by a set of bye-laws in September 1995. The primary functions of the TTRBC are to: 1. Maintain an official list of the bird species of Trinidad and Tobago. 2. Maintain a review list of bird species whose occurrence in Trinidad and Tobago requires further documentation. 3. Solicit details for all reports of species on its review list. 4. Evaluate the adequacy of documentation for all such reports. 5. Publish periodic reports of its findings. The TTRBC evaluates reports of birds with the aim of converting them into documented records that can be used reliably for scientific studies of bird distribution and patterns of avian vagrancy. The TTRBC currently comprises seven members including a Secretary responsible for assigning a number to and cataloging each report received, circulating the reports among TTRBC members, and compiling the decisions. Each TTRBC member evaluates whether the information provided in each report is sufficient to support the identification. A record is accepted when a minimum of six members vote for it. For species whose origin is questionable (e.g., escaped cagebird), each member judges whether the bird more likely arrived under its own power or with the aid of humans; a minimum of six votes is required to accept the record as a natural occurrence.

Extractions: Gola malimbes The most recent comprehensive bird survey in the Gola forests in 1989, uncovered 274 bird species in the forests, of which 14 are threatened with extinction. These alarming findings convinced the RSPB and its Sierra Leone partners, the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone, to increase their efforts to conserve the Gola forests. Some of the amazing birds in the Gola forests are: The white-necked picathartes , which has a striking appearance and strange nesting habits. It builds a nest of mud, like a swallow's but far bigger, under rocky overhangs deep in the forest. There are 52 known nesting sites in the Gola forests. They are constantly monitored by the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone with support from the RSPB. The Gola malimbe , a large black and yellow weaver, is very rare and lives in the forest canopy the upper reaches of the trees. The Gola malimbe was not found in the 1989 survey although it has been recorded in the Gola forests before. It is thought to live only in the Gola forests and eastern Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire. The rufous fishing-owl , a large owl with orange-coloured back and wings and light under parts, lives along riverbanks in the rainforest and in mangroves. This bird's forest home is in danger from logging, and the fish on which it depends for food are disappearing as a result of poisoning and other inappropriate fishing practices.

Extractions: on the tiny island of St. Lucia BEFORE DAWN on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Michael Bobb emerges from the tin-roofed, pink-and-blue cabin that serves as his base in the dense rain forest. A broad-shouldered, barrel-chested officer in St. Lucia's Forest and Lands Department, Bobb rallies the troops from inside the field station and scattered tents outside: fellow foresters, local students, and foreign biologists and conservationists. Despite the steady downpour, it's time to look for parrots. Bobb slips on a day pack containing his binoculars, notebook, field guide and a poncho and trudges down a muddy trail through a thick mist that conceals a chorus of croaking frogs. Clad in T-shirt and jeans, he seems oblivious to the rain. After a mile and a half, near the top of a ridge, he stops at the base of a silver-colored gommier tree. His destination is still a hundred feet overhead. Taking care not to slip on metal spikes drilled into the smooth trunk, the forest officer begins to climb. Eighty-five feet up, branches and dangling lianas impede his progress. He wraps an arm around one branch from below and, suspended like Spiderman, hauls his bulky body on top of it to pull himself the final few feet up to an observation platform.

In most cases all that is required is a brief description based on diagnostic features, which establish the birds identity. These are often species that are less than annual in a county and may easily be confused with other species. Lists of species that require a description are usually given in the local bird report each year. Rare birds in Britain Species which are rarely recorded in Britain, require a description to be submitted to the British Birds Rarities Committee (BBRC). Descriptions of rare birds should be sent to your county bird recorder who will send a copy on to BBRC. The committee is made up of 10 voting members and a non-voting secretary who serve for a fixed term.
