Extractions: RAILWAYS IN CANADA: A BRIEF HISTORY Introduction Railways and railway technology have figured prominently in the development of Canada from the 1850s to the present day. Even before Canada extended its political boundaries across the continent, railways played a unique role in the birth of a nation that has continually faced the problems created by a comparatively small population spread out across a diverse and often inhospitable landscape. The Dominion of Canada in 1867 was based largely upon the willingness of the new central government to encourage and construct a railway system capable of tying together the Atlantic region to that of the Great Lakes. Once formed, Canada and Canadians looked to railways as a sole means of political and economic survival and the uniting of the West with the rest of Canada. While railways may have been effective tools of economic and political policy throughout much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, they represented some of the best and worst traits of modern industrialism. For the Canadian public, railways were an obvious example of the economic and social changes brought about by rapid advances in technology. Steam engines, hidden away in factories and shops, had already transformed the means whereby goods were produced; yet in the 1860s it was the steam locomotive that epitomized the rapidly changing pace and apparently irresistible momentum of industrial Canada (Fig. 1)

The late 1800s gold rush brought men looking for fortune, and many of the communities they settled remain today. The other major factor in the settlement of the area was the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway. There are numerous towns throughout that owe their existence to the railway, but this area proved to be one of the hardest for the railroad to develop. It was also during this time that many of the natural wonders that comprise the area's National Parks were found. The occurrences of the railroad settled the area, but the demographics were altered during the Second World War, when Japanese internment camps were set up here and some of those forced to move here chose to remain. The Canadian Rockies make a great vacation destination for history lovers, as so many of the region's attractions are based on days past. Many important moments in Canada 's history have played out here, and the opportunity to relive them is endless.

Extractions: Peter Fidler, fur-trader, explorer and cartographer, died at Fort Dauphin [Manitoba] on December 17, 1822. Fidler joined the Hudson's Bay Company as a labourer in 1788. He had received some formal education, and soon learned surveying and astronomy. Fidler was highly respected for his abilities as a cartographer, and several of his maps were sent back to London and used as the basis for future explorations by the Company. Fidler kept detailed journals and diaries at the posts at which he served, and his notebooks provide a valuable record of life at the early fur-trade posts. December Doctors in southern Alberta demanded that the provincial government control the amount of pollution (specifically human waste) that was contaminating Alberta's rivers. They claimed that the regular outbreaks of typhoid experienced by most communities were attributable to the filthy water. Local media and the public were not convinced and argued that almost all rivers and streams in Alberta were glacial in origin, and that the temperature and speed of the water inhibited the growth of disease-bearing organisms. December Commercial travellers' associations across North America united to curtail the practice of tipping staff in hotels and restaurants. In Calgary, however, some travelling salesmen were concerned about the effect that such a ban would have on the service they received. Several of them suggested that the demeanor of service staff was sullen enough and wondered what depths it would sink to without the ameliorating influence of the prospective tip. The gratuity system was claimed to be the only protection the public had against a waiter.

During the early part of the 20 th century, this marshalling yard was one of the largest in the world. It was the centre point of the Dominion, moving material and goods in both directions between eastern and western Canada. Over the years, this railway company has changed and evolved in many aspects including service lines, modes of transportation and even things as simple as its name. CP Rail System, or CPRS, was changed again to Canadian Pacific Railway Company in 1996. The nature of Manitoba-based railway services have also evolved throughout the 20 th century and beyond, including operations across the nation. The railway employs 1000s of Manitobans and spends approximately 2 billion dollars in our province on payroll, provincial taxes, purchases and capital spending. This is in addition to indirect spending generating by business done with Manitoba-based suppliers. It maintains and operates approximately a 2000 km network of line to serve its Manitoba customers and connects them to terminals and major coastal ports throughout the North American continent.

Canadian National Railways 4-6-2 Locomotive No. 5288 History: Canadian National Railways' medium-size 4-6-2 "Pacific"-type Class J-7 locomotive rolled out of the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1919. The rapid corporate reorganizations coupled with Canadian government acquisition of private railway companies then taking place in Canada and the creation, while this locomotive was being built, of the Canadian National Railways on December 20, 1918, left this locomotive with a particularly complicated conception. Canadian National motive power historians Anthony Clegg and Ray Corley outlined the situation: Ownership of several orders placed by the Federal Government [of Canada] through the Canadian Government Railway for assignment to the various [rail]roads was vested in 'Canadian National Rolling Stock Limited.' Essentially similar locomotives owned by the latter company, but operated initially on different railways, were occasionally modified to suit the practice of the operating line. For example, the twenty J-7 Class locomotives constructed for the CGR's use, (later CN 5250-5279) had closed cabs in keeping with the rigors of the Canadian winter; the fifteen J-7 engines destined for Grand Trunk use [including No. 5288], however, were given open cabs, in line with GTR practice.
