Extractions: Following the success of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Canada's first railway connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific coast, two new transcontinental lines were built before World War I. These were the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway. However, as a result of the outbreak of the war in 1914 and high construction costs, these railways quickly encountered serious financial difficulties. On the recommendation of a Royal commission, in 1917 the federal Government decided to combine the operations of the government-owned Canadian Government Railways and the privately owned, but financially troubled, Canadian Northern Railways System. The new railway was called the Canadian National Railways in 1918. A year later, Canadian National took over the operations of another western line, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In 1923, following the difficult negotiations, CN assumed control of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, the oldest and largest railway company operating in eastern Canada. With the nationalization of these lines, Canadian National became the largest railway in Canada. It operated over 35,000 kilometres of railway lines linking the country from coast to coast as well as lines in the United States. Over the years, other railway lines, such as the Newfoundland Railway, were also absorbed into C.N.

Intercolonial Railway - Canadian History LEncyclopédie de lhistoire du Québec / The Quebec history Encyclopedia The Canadian National Railways Act was passed in 1919, and four years later an http://www2.marianopolis.edu/quebechistory/encyclopedia/IntercolonialRailway.htm
Extractions: August 2004 Intercolonial Railway [This text was written in 1948 by W. Stewart WALLACE. For the full citation, see the end of the text.] About thirty years before Confederation united the Maritime provinces with the central provinces of Canada, the first proposals were made to unite them by railway communication. St. Andrews was the winter port of entry to British territory, and a Railway Association was formed there to promote the St. Andrews and Quebec Railroad; Lower Canada was approached, and both government and press gave favourable response. In 1836 a deputation was sent to England to carry on negotiations with the Imperial government for financial support; some encouragement was given, and a survey was begun by Captain Yule. No sooner was this step taken than the United States , aroused by the prospect of this development, questioned the always uncertain boundary between New Brunswick and Maine, and the railway project was held in abeyance until 1842, when the Ashburton Treaty fixed the boundary. Maine now stood, a wedge separating Lower Canada and New Brunswick; Yule's survey was found to be mostly outside British territory, and a new military significance was seen in the choice of a route. Moreover, Halifax was henceforth the accepted terminus, as St. Andrews was now too near the border.
