Extractions: George Stephenson was the first person to utilize steam power for locomotives, making railway use faster and more efficient. He called this new steam powered locomotive The Rocket, which started running passenger and commercial trains between Liverpool and Manchester in 1830. The invention of this locomotive required track to run on, thus people began to migrate throughout England building track for the new railways. In 1838 there was only 500 miles of track laid, but by 1855 there was 8,000 miles of track. Not only did the railway provide jobs to a quarter of a million people, but it also provided a solid network of infrastructure. The railroad was a strong boost to the British economy and would provide a good example for how to develop its colonies. Financed initially by individual British industrialists, railways were built in the British colonies. The purpose of these railways was to bring raw materials from the interior to port so that they could be shipped to England. As a result of railroads in the colonies, products could be marketed to more people. The greater demand for goods brought down prices and businesses flourished. Railroads were built in India, Australia, and Africa mostly but it was in Africa specifically that they were put to a different use. Britain decided to build track where there was nothing important so as to encourage whites to settle the colony and farm the land. The British Cecil Rhodes dreamed to build a railway from Cape to Cairo, passing through British territory all the way. It was this kind of ambition that promoted the colonization of

But unlike many of the other retirees from the Albuquerque yards, Takahachi came a long way around before starting with the railroad. Born in California, he and his Japanese immigrant parents along with other family members were interned in an Arizona detention center at the outbreak of World War II. A job in a Cleveland defense plant enabled him to get a special release permit from the camp. After that he went into the military and that led him eventually to Albuquerque. When Takahachi first started in the backshops, he was employed as a common laborer. He washed heavy equipment, worked the forklift, and ran the carloader from stall to stall. Some time later he became a painterassigned first to boxcars and then to locomotives. He painted the numbers and all insignia on the locomotives. One of the engines he worked on was Engine #2926 that stood in Coronado Park for many years, but was moved back on the tracks in 2001 for its eventual relocation to the Wheels Museum site. Usually the locomotives were painted with lacquer paints after they were sprayed with steam and water to wash off the grease and remove the old paint. Some parts were dipped into a lye vat for cleaning. Locomotives were painted every time they came in for major repair or maintenance.

He turned to John J. Coit who operated a successful eighteen inch gauge (1/3rd scale) miniature steam railroad at Eastlake Park (now Lincoln Park) in Los Angeles. He persuaded him to oversee the construction and management of a mile and three quarter long railroad that would take passengers from the Windward Avenue business district on a loop across canal bridges and through the canalled residential district, then return via a loop up Washington Boulevard, past its Lake Avenue maintenance yard and back to the Windward station along Mildred Avenue. Coit, who had designed his own locomotive, ordered a heavier Prairie 2-6-2 oil burning engine at a cost of $4510 from the Johnson Machine Works in Los Angeles. The locomotive was finished in black with brass rails and silver lettering. The first set of five, 12 passenger cars was painted royal blue, while the second set ordered later was painted cherry red. Work on laying the tracks on the city streets, however, was delayed while Kinney awaited the Ocean Park's Board of Trustees to grant him permission. Coit, in the meantime, constructed a storage and maintenance year along Lake Avenue (now Venice Boulevard where it intersects Abbot Kinney Blvd). He built a three stall engine house, 20 foot diameter turntable, oil and water tanks, a two-track storage shed for the passenger cars, and a machine shop capable of servicing and repairing the locomotives and cars.
