Extractions: by Carly Roden All over the world, railroads have been an innovation with vast impacts on society, ushering in an era of industrial revolution and literally forging a path for increased mobility and mass communication. The Yucatan Peninsula is no exception to this trend. Saturated with jungle and flanked by mountains on the west, the region had been cut off from the rest of Mexico throughout most of history. Whereas ships had once been the sole means of transport to and from the area, the advent of railroads in the area in the late 1800's fostered cultural enrichment and economic growth. Extractions: The importance of railroading not only reaches back in time, but to those of thoughtful inclination it embraces the present and the future, and touches all corners of the Keystone State. More than one hundred and forty thousand visitors traveled to the museum last year. Some arrive humming Amtrak's commercial jingle, "There's something about a train that's magic!" The "magic" first came to the Strasburg area in 1823, when Colonel John Stevens (1749-1838) passed through. Travel in the fledgling nation was difficult at best; a trip from Philadelphia to Baltimore, for example, took five days, and commerce of any significance was largely limited to travel by coastal waters. Stevens came by horse-drawn coach because railroads had not yet been built in America. He came because he believed that there should be, there must be, railroads. His dream was eventually fulfilled with the development of a mighty industry that shaped the life and fortune of a nation. Colonel Stevens, like many who contributed to the development of the Keystone State, was neither born nor lived in Pennsylvania. A patriot of the American Revolution, Stevens lived mostly in Hoboken, New Jersey, where initially he devoted his energies to the application of steam engines to power commercial boats. His early work paralleled that of inventor and engineer Robert Fulton (1765-1815), and in 1809 his steamboat Phoenix was engaged in regular commercial transport between Philadelphia and Trenton. Later hailed as a "genius of steam" and as "the father of American railroading," Stevens himself never actually built railroads, but his was the first voice in America to strongly proclaim their need and their feasibility.
South Carolina Railroad Museum The South Carolina railroad Museum, Inc. was established in 1973 by a group The Museum named the line the Rockton, Rion, and Western railroad (RR W). http://www.scrm.org/history.asp
Extractions: The South Carolina Railroad Museum, Inc. was established in 1973 by a group of dedicated railroad enthusiasts from the Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina areas. In October 1983, the Museum received by way of donation the former Rockton and Rion Railway located in Fairfield County, South Carolina Currently, the Museum operates on 5 miles of the 11.5 mile line of the former Rockton and Rion Railroad. The eastern terminal of the line is at the junction with the Norfolk Southern Railroad at the Rockton Station. The line runs generally westward through the Rion community to Anderson Quarry, home of the world famous blue granite called the "silk of the trade". The Museum has accumulated many pieces of rolling stock by way of gift from the Charleston chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The equipment includes various types of freight and passenger cars as well as a steam locomotive #44 which once belonged to the Hampton and Branchville Railroad. More equipment has been acquired including cabooses, freight cars, and diesel engines from CSX, Norfolk Southern, the Lancaster and Chester, and other railroads. Plans call for the construction of a locomotive shop and equipment maintenance area as well as display tracks. Ultimately the Museum plans to have educational train excursions over the entire 11.5 mile route, exhibitions of freight and passenger train operations, static displays of railroad related artifacts, and a library of railroad related publications.
