Extractions: An alternative to surgery for patients with uterine fibroids F ibroids are benign tumors of the uterus that are a common cause of heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain and pressure in women. Fibroids often fail to respond to medical therapies and either myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroids) or hysterectomy is then recommended. In recent years, there has been considerable research aimed at developing less invasive alternatives to surgery. One such therapy, uterine artery embolization (UAE) , shows great promise in controlling symptoms caused by fibroids. This site is intended to inform patients and physicians about uterine fibroids, their current treatment, about uterine artery embolization and the research Georgetown University is conducting on this therapy.

Extractions: June 27, 2005 On June 24, the House approved a fiscal year 2006 appropriation of $28.5 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The bill (H.R. 3010) includes $299.8 billion for the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). The Committee did not change the Administrations budget requests for either the NIH or the NIBIB; the bill provides an increase of only 0.5 percent over 2005 for both organizations. These small increases reflect the overall constraints that have severely limited federal spending on domestic discretionary programs in the last couple of years. Earlier, the House Appropriations Committee had included several provisions related to the NIBIB in its report that accompanied this bill. Among these was language concerning the Five-Year Professional Judgment Budget for the NIBIB that the Committee requested from the NIH in the 2005 bill. This non-binding budget projection is designed to describe the scientific opportunities that could be exploited if the NIBIB has sufficient resources. It represents a strong rationale for increasing the NIBIB budget over the long term. In the current report, the Committee highlighted the conclusion in the Five-Year Budget that biomedical imaging and bioengineering dynamic and ripe with opportunities for major scientific advances that could be translated into dramatic improvements in health care.
