Extractions: Random House Seymour is also a novelist, and her biography is as much an act of imaginative reconstruction as of straightforward record. We read, for example, of the child Nice's reactions to the deadly Paris-Madrid race of May 1903. Seymour puts her in the arms of lovers the night before races, waking up the next morning hungover from morphine and sex. Seymour is more circumspect in examining Nice's ties to Nazi Germany. Whether Nice collaborated with the Nazis is impossible to ascertain. But there is no record of her being a Gestapo agent, the specific allegation made to her face at a Monaco pre-Grand Prix party in 1949 that effectively ended her career. She certainly had contacts with members of the Nazi party prior to the war, but this was more due to mutual interests in racing than any sympathies with Nazism. The European motor racing world was small, and, impelled by Hitler's ambition, the German motor industry began to dominate the sport in 1930s. Nice spent the war years with her lover, living quietly. As Seymour writes, for some postwar accusers, living reasonably well was evidence enough of collaboration. Seymour seems to feel the overall verdict is not guilty, but there is no definitive evidence either way.

Vincent Lauwers: I'm sure there's a lot of listeners out there thinking these guys are crazy, you know, they're missing legs; one guy can't walk, his back's broken in several places, he can't use his legs; the other guy's missing a leg, they must be missing a few rocks in the head or something. But in all honesty it's not that bad, and it's a sense to show to people that we can do it. Someone's got a disability, doesn't mean they have to sit at home, watch TV and get pushed around. Amanda Smith: That's Vincent Lauwers, about to set sail for Japan in the Osaka Cup yacht race. And we'll hear more from him later in the program.

Extractions: Biography Joel Allard was born and raised in the small Northern Ontario community of Elliot Lake. At the close of his high school years, Joel was looking to take on a career. At 18, he moved to Toronto, where he earned his Electronics Engineering Technician Diploma and Electronics Engineering Technology Diploma. Almost immediately following college graduation he moved to Northwestern Ontario to take employment with one of Canadas largest telecommunications company. Working in Marathon for a brief period, he then moved to Manitouwadge, where he planted his roots for the last 13 years. For the next five years, Joel volunteered his time and electronics expertise with the Manitouwadge Community Television Organization. He served as technical advisor at first and later was elected President of the organization. During his tenure, a state of the art television studio was implemented. It was also during this time that Joel became a race fan. In 1994, Joel decided that he wanted to experience racing up close and personal. He took two months vacation to tour the U.S. and see some races in person. Every weekend, he was in a different State, at a different track, for a different type of autoracing. He witnessed IndyCar (CART today), Nascar, Busch and NHRA. Along the way he met some wonderful people who are still his friends today. During the last week of his vacation, Joel was visiting some friends in Toronto when he heard on the radio that there would be some autoracing at Mosport. As student in Toronto, Joel had always wanted to go to Mosport but had never had the opportunity. This was the famous May 2-4 race weekend. There were all types of cars and all ages of drivers. The pro races in the U.S. had all been equally impressive but none had been as impressive to Joel as the amateur racing that he witnessed at Mosport. It was on that weekend that Joel decided that being a fan was no longer enough. Racecar drivers werent gods after all. They were mere mortals just like him, and they came in all ages, sizes and gender. And if they could be racecar drivers, so could he.

Photographs of Harriet Quimby reveal a beautiful, slender woman with dark eyes and a sense of style. Descriptions of her in news articles also noted she was intelligent, inquisitive, creative, and daring enough to fly an aeroplane during a time when driving an automobile was still uncommonly exciting. And it's easy to see where they got this impression. Whenever he gives a speech, he invariably comes off sounding like some kind of ignoramus, who experiences difficulty wrapping his lips around the words that scroll across the Teleprompter. And when he has to work off-the-cuff, his folksy demeanor makes him seem more like the store manager of a Radio Shack than the President of the United States. But George W. Bush is fully aware of how his enemies perceive him, and this is precisely how he wants them to react. His personality and mannerisms are actually the result of deliberate effort. This is not to say that it's all an act, but he does emphasize these elements of his personality for the benefit of the press and general public. And yet these affectations continue to be astonishingly effective; his act still manages to fool even his political opponents, who really ought to know better. After all, the basis of Bush's phenomenal political career has been people's underestimating him. As his political advisor Karl Rove said in 2002: "I can't explain why they underestimate him, but they do. Whatever the reason, I hope they keep doing it."

It encourages the submission of articles from a broad variety of approaches, including social, political, urban, intellectual and cultural history. Quarterly: February, May, August, November From biography to history: writing the modern British monarchy This article traces the development of biographical and historical writing about the British monarchy from the 'golden age' of Elizabeth I to the House of Windsor. It examines the differences in approach over the past two centuries, in particular, from the uncritical biographies of the Victorian period to the current unregulated flood of material, authorized and unauthorized. Such an analysis goes beyond the history of dynasties and individuals and becomes a history of society as reflected in the changing experiences of the British royal family.
