Extractions: JSD PDF version The JSD is the flagship publication for the National Staff Development Council. It is published four times a year (winter, spring, summer, and fall) and is included in all categories of membership in NSDC. The JSD is available only through NSDC and is not sold on news stands. NSDC is a nonprofit educational association with 10,000 members who are primarily district administrators, principals, and teachers with an interest in professional development. They are committed to high levels of learning and performing for all students and staff members. NSDC members look to the JSD for articles by leading educators, reports of effective programs and practices, book reviews, and columns. They expect articles that are interesting, thought provoking, timely, practical, informative, concise, and complete. Issues are organized around themes, but each issue also includes several non-thematic articles. In general, articles that are appropriate for an announced theme are more likely to be published. Extractions: Edward "Ted" Harrison Ted Harrison and his twin sister were born in Wingate County Durham, England. He was educated at Wellfield Grammar School, and later at West Hartlepool College of Art and Kings College Newcastle- on-Tyne. He served in the British Army Intelligence Corp from 1945-1948 in India and Africa. He taught school in Britain, Malaysia, New Zealand and Canada. He married Robina McNicol in 1960, lived in Yukon Territory until 1993, then left for Lotus Land, B.C. where he now resides. Selected Publications: O Canada . Toronto: Kids Can Press, 1992.

TIMEOFF PHOTO/MARK CZAJKOWSKI Through his enthusiasm for the written word, author Christopher Klim has launched a new literary magazine. Being a writer/editor was probably the last thing Christopher Klim and his teachers imagined he would do for a living. Grappling with dyslexia in the lower grades, he was full of imagination and ideas, but had difficulty with the finer points of the language. "Until about the 5th grade, I couldn't really read or write very well, but I was always dreaming up little stories," says Mr. Klim, speaking from his home in Titusville. "Telling people I wanted to be a writer that probably should have been my last choice. Everyone was always discouraging me." Perhaps that is what motivated him to become an author, a detail-oriented editor and a coach for other struggling writers. In June, Mr. Klim and Hopewell Publications launched Writers Notes Magazine. As senior editor, he gathered and edited works from across the country, culling hundreds of manuscripts down to about 130 pages of poetry, fiction, interviews, essays, humor and how-to tips by a variety of folks in the field. More recently, he released Everything Burns (Hopewell Publications, $15.95), the sequel to his 2002 novel Jesus Lives in Trenton (Hopewell Publications, $15.95), featuring the itinerant journalist and sleuth Boots Means.

A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, she also teaches. After having read the millionth picture book to a grade one class, she began writing herself. Maxine lives in a small fishing village on Lake Erie with her husband William and two Yorkies. In the summer, she lives abroad a sloop, Windseeker 1 . Extractions: Ludmila Zeman was born in the Czech Republic and spent her early years helping her father, the famed filmmaker Karel Zeman, in his studio making puppets for his animated films. Later, she became an art director and script writer in his studio. She also illustrated her first children's books there. Since immigrating to Canada with her husband and two daughters in 1984, she has taught art in Vancouver, created animated film for Sesame Street, and with her husband, made the film Lord of the Sky an award-winning animated work for the NFB. Extractions: Jan Andrews Jan Andrews writes for children and young adults because it is their stories which come into her head. She is also a traditional storyteller, with a passion for epic and myth. She has told portions of The Iliad and The Odyssey and believes these tellings inform her work. Although she lives on a lake in Ontario in a setting she is certain comes close to paradise, she delights in travelling for readings and workshops. The Canadian landscape is her love. It compels her books and she is fairly convinced that if she had not come here from England she might never have become a writer at all. Her interests include canoeing, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, talking and thinking about children's books, engaging in discussions about oral traditons, and most importantly living life. Extractions: When he was three, Tim ran away from home with a tea cozy on his head. That was in Cheshire, England. He ended up in Kitimat, B.C. He is not sure if these incidents are connected, but he believes fervently that if one is going to become a writer one should keep one's head warm. Tim has written twenty-two books, a dozen radio plays, the book and libretto for an opera, the book and lyrics for a musical, and lots of songs for his band, Louis the Dreamer .
