Extractions: Parent involvement is a key element of the School Development Program. The Program recognizes the critical role parents can and should play in their children's education. Parents are their children's first teachers. As they care for and nurture them, an emotional attachment and bond develops between the child and the parents. This bond allows the parents to influence the development of the child along the critical developmental pathways necessary for learning. Through day-to-day life with their parents, children learn all kinds of things. When a curious child asks questions and receives answers and explanations from parents or other members of the family and social network, those adults are stimulating that child's development. When those adults show that they're interested in reading, the child internalizes the idea of reading as something important. The motivation for learning, therefore, grows out of the child's relationships with important adults. A child from a non-mainstream, marginal family is likely to have missed out on such early stimulation, and enters school unprepared to meet the expectations of that school, a mainstream institution. A child is expected to learn to read at school, but may come from a home in which no one reads, and may never have heard a parent read bedtime stories. The child's language skills may be underdeveloped or nonstandard.

Do you wish there was someone who could explain the terms and the differences between each of these organizations? If so, your wish is about to come true. Let's start by defining the acronyms. Most people know that PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. SEPTA stands for Special Education Parent Teacher Association and a SEPTSA includes the students. While PTO is shorthand for a Parent Teacher Organization. So now you know what the letters stand for, what do they mean to you as a parent? PTAs are local groups that affiliate with the national PTA, an organization with more than 6 million members nationwide and overseas. These local groups pay state and national dues, but in exhcnage, receive benefits from the state and national organizations. PTAs allow members to network with fellow members/volunteers who help one another, share resources and ideas. SEPTAs are community-wide organizations. They aren't associated with a single school, like the vast majority of PTAs. And unlike most PTAs, SEPTAs focus primarily on special education issues and advocacy for children with disabilities. National PTA first introduced the concept of SEPTA in 1996 to address the unique needs of parents of children with special needs. SEPTA members should also consider participating in their school PTA or PTO. School-based parent organizations can provide parent involvement opportunities that many SEPTAs do not.

The presentation should include: 1) Parent brochure and handout (available from CHOICE), 2) Powerpoint presentation of essential information (available from CHOICE) 3) Guest speaker. The guest speaker, a person of influence in your community, should give a brief presentation that outlines the concerns, reasons for improvement, and possible solutions. If you do not have such a speaker, an alternative is to have a leader within the educational community (i.e. a principle, school board trustee, PTA president) offer an introduction and endorsement. This Forum is part of the Nueces County Futures Forum coordinated by the Nueces County Extension Office. Such events are being held in every Texas county as part of the Texas Community Futures Forum, a state-wide needs assessment sponsored and facilitated by Texas Cooperative Extension. Texas Community Futures Forum County-level involvement in the Texas Community Futures Forum began in January 1999, with Texans from all segments of the population participating. Citizens in every county were asked to study, discuss and define their communities' current and future needs. Because the populations of Texas counties vary widely, within the framework of the Futures Forum a "community" may be a neighborhood, town, county or region. Texas Cooperative Extension facilitated the partnering of county government, state agencies, organizations, businesses and other groups to gather information about local needs and issues, and then helped organize action teams to address them. This was an ambitious undertaking. It was also a unique opportunity for many groups to work together in meeting the needs of Texans in the 21st Century.

Snyder to give a free chess presentation or assembly at your local school (Fort Collins/Greeley/Loveland area). Out of area schools pay a fee ranging from $100 to $400 per day depending on distance and how many assemblies are given. This is an excellent way to get a chess program started at your school. Presentations are recommended for grades 3-8 with a typical group size ranging from 30 to 120 students. However, presentations for larger or smaller groups can be arranged. A large demonstration board is used for an effective and dynamic delivery that students will remember for years to come. The one-hour presentations cover basic rules and strategy. After the presentation chess sets (provided by CFJ) can be set up during the lunch recess for interested students to play supervised practice games. Mr. Snyder holds the world record for having introduced chess to over 170,000 children through his school presentations!
