Patient Information A patient information handout on screening for prostate cancer , written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 1541. Another handout on management options for prostate cancer , also written by the authors, is provided on page 1545. P rostate cancer is second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in American men. In 1997, approximately 209,900 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed, and more than 41,800 deaths were attributed to this malignancy. At present, chemotherapy and immunotherapy cannot cure prostate cancer once it has spread beyond the gland. Therefore, curative treatment for localized tumors may be the best hope of lowering the mortality rate for prostate cancer. According to this viewpoint, the primary focus of prostate cancer management should be the detection and aggressive treatment of tumors while they are still confined to the prostate.

Extractions: WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that arises in the prostate gland. [ See Box The Prostate Gland below. ] As with any cancer, if it is advanced or left untreated in early stages, it can eventually spread through the blood and lymph fluid to other organs. Fortunately, prostate cancer tends to be slow growing compared to other cancers. As many as 90% of all prostate cancers remain dormant and clinically unimportant for decades. This high incidence of latent or incidental malignancy is unique to the prostate gland. Most older men eventually develop at least microscopic evidence of prostate cancer, but it often grows so slowly that, as one specialist has written, many men with prostate cancer "die with it, rather than from it."
Extractions: What Is Prostate Cancer? Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men (excluding skin cancer) in the United States. It is usually found in older men, and the risk of having prostate cancer increases with age. It is mainly found in men of 55 years and above. In this disease, cancer cells are first formed in the prostate and can then spread to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and other selected structures. What is the Prostate? The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that makes and stores seminal fluid. Seminal fluid is a milky liquid that nourishes sperm. The prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It encircles the upper part of the urethra, which is the tube that empties urine from the bladder. The prostate is a part of every man's reproductive system. It requires male hormones, like testosterone, to function properly, helping to regulate bladder control and normal sexual functioning. Cause?
Extractions: defaultStatus="All Seekers"; This web site, Allseekers.com, evolved from an earlier site, Sophrony.com, which was first made available on the Internet early in 2000. In Sophrony.com, we attempted to show how Guy Leekley had been applying the teachings of the Tao Te Ching to his own inner struggles with alcohol abuse and other obsessions. He believed that over many years, hormone imbalances in his body brought on by these extremes had contributed to a diagnosis of prostate cancer at the end of 1990. We tried to show in Sophrony.com how during that decade from 1990-2000, as Guy was working through his translation of the Tao Te Ching, its teachings helped him to deal with his various addictions, obsessions and delusions. This spiritual text provided guidance for living in a manner that has helped to keep the cancer in remission. With the publication of his Tao Te Ching A New Version for All Seekers , Guy feels that now it is time to retire Sophrony.com and use Allseekers.com to show how we can all learn from the teachings of the Tao Te Ching We coined the term Sophrony because there did not seem to be a word in English that clearly expresses the view of how we should live that one finds in the Tao Te Ching . The closest that Guy could find is the Greek word, sophrosyne, an ideal of the ancient Greeks that has no equivalent in English. It meant the opposite of arrogance and insolence, learning to live gracefully within our natural limitations, and following the inner laws of harmony and proportion.
Extractions: Hello, I'm Virgil Simons, welcome to my On-line Guide to Fighting Prostate Cancer . At the age of 48, after the results of my first PSA test, I was told that I might have prostate cancer. Staring into an abyss that seemed without hope, I questioned - was I going to die of cancer as my mother had?.......what treatments were possible?......could I survive?! After a sufficient period of anger, self-pity and general confusion I made a decision - I AM GOING TO LIVE!!!! From that point on it was a matter of whether it would be on my terms or the prostate cancer's. KNOWLEDGE would be the edge to tip the balance to my favor - . But where to look, who to believe Then I saw my computer and the answer was evident and manifest - use this information highway as the road to save my own life. In the eight years since that first diagnosis, through to a successful radical prostatectomy and subsequent clean PSA's, access to the Internet provided me with the information, dialogue with health care professionals and other survivors needed to regain control of my life. I became a partner with my doctors in deciding what was the best treatment for me that would be the greatest chance for cure and retention of the quality-of-life I desired!!
