4-H Summer Camps Teach Life Skills June 11, 2004. 4H Summer camps teach Life Skills 4-H, the youth development program of Virginia Cooperative Extension offers a variety of camping http://www.ext.vt.edu/news/releases/061104/summercamp.html
Extractions: June 11, 2004 4-H Summer Camps Teach Life Skills BLACKSBURG Summer camps are a great resource for parents to utilize during the lazy days of their children's summer vacation. However, camps today can offer a lot more for children than archery and arts and crafts. 4-H, the youth development program of Virginia Cooperative Extension offers a variety of camping programs in leadership, environmental and aquatic science, and journalism and broadcasting among many others, said Barry Garst, 4-H youth development specialist at Virginia Tech. Each year more than 26,000 youth ages five to 18 participate in 4-H camps. There are three different types of 4-H camps: residential camping, specialty/day camps, and 4-H school enrichment based upon the Virginia Standards of Learning. "4- H camps help children to begin to realize their full potential in the areas of leadership and various skills. Although campers learn traditional camp activities like swimming and environmental education, the most important things that children learn at 4-H camp is how to take care of themselves and how to develop positive relationships with others," said Garst. The camping philosophy in Virginia 4-H is dedicated to the positive individual development of youth through experiential learning to promote advancement in life skills-knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that will enable youth to become self-directed, contributing members of society. This supports the 'learn-by-doing' philosophy of 4-H, said Garst.

Extractions: Date: 6/26/2000 By Shelley Gollust, Jerilyn Watson VOICE ONE: More than nine-million American children are spending part of their summer at a camp. They are swimming, playing sports, making music or learning to use a computer. I'm Shirley Griffith. VOICE TWO: And I'm Steve Ember. We tell about summer camps today on the VOA Special English program, THIS IS AMERICA. ((THEME)) VOICE ONE: Traditional American camps offer children a chance to play many sports. These camps may be in the mountains, in the woods, or at a lake. Other camps teach mainly inside activities, like painting or computer skills. Children at all kinds of camps meet new friends, learn new skills, and develop independence. Some children go to camp during the day and return home at night. Others stay at camp all day and all night. Most children who attend camp are between the ages of about seven and sixteen. Some children stay at an overnight camp for one or two weeks. Others stay for as many as eight weeks. Parents pay from one hundred to more than seven-hundred dollars a week for overnight camps. VOICE TWO: Children from poor families who live in a big city might not get the chance to go to a summer camp. One long lasting organization gives New York City children that chance. People around the country give money to support the "Fresh Air Fund."

Millions of American children attend summer camp. Most summer camps teach swimming and sports. But some are designed to teach special skills. One of these is Concordia Language Villages camp in the state of Minnesota. Campers there learn to speak a foreign language without the use of books or teachers. The counselors speak the language all the time and show the campers what to do. The campers learn the language by watching and hearing the words. One student at the German camp said she experienced what it would be like to be in Germany. Colleges and universities organize other learning camps. Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois offers a week long experience called âSummer Wings Camp.â The camp is held at the Southern Illinois Airport. Campers learn about the history of flight and experience what an airplane pilot does.

Starfish Values Program - American Camp Association In the recent past, programs to affirmatively teach children to adopt positive Character education and teaching values is at the center of what camp http://www.acacamps.org/media_center/benefits_of_camp/article9.php
Extractions: contact us search site map People ... Volunteer Starfish Values Program by Jay Jacobs Moral education - the training of heart and mind toward the good - involves many things. It involves rules and precepts - the do's and don'ts of life with others - as well as explicit instructions, exhortations, and training. If we want our children to possess the traits of character we most admire, we need to teach them what those traits are and why they deserve both admiration and allegiance. - William J. Bennett, The Book of Virtues The core of our camp mission, similar to most camps, is teaching children the skills of making and keeping friends while building self-esteem and self-confidence. In the past, simply providing a safe, fun, nurturing environment would provide the necessary ingredients to "make good stuff" happen. Times have changed, however, and so must the strategies and tactics we employ to ensure that we can deliver "the good stuff" of camp to every child we serve. In the recent past, programs to affirmatively teach children to adopt positive character traits and good values were looked upon as either something that should be left to parents and the home or just not cool enough for the fun and excitement expected at camp. Because of the preponderance of violent video games and the magnitude of violence and sex on TV and in the movies that our children are easily exposed to, we, as a society, may be losing ground. There seems to be an increase in violence among children and violent outbursts among adults. Road rage and parents beating parents at their children's hockey games are just some examples. This points to a need for more character education - and camp, as always, can play an active part in the solution.
