Adding Value to Products/Services Prince Edward Island is already noted for the excellence of many of its products. Significant gains have been made in recent years in adding value to raw products. My Government will accelerate the move up the value chain from commodity production and mass market products, to high value-added, unique products and services across the range of industries and business sectors. Small- and medium-sized enterprises will have a central role to play in this shift to premium quality, niche products and services. Knowledge Economy In the past two years, PEI has positioned itself to thrive in the knowledge-based economy of the new millennium. Our existing economic sectors and our public sector offer a wealth of opportunities for knowledge-based economic growth. New opportunities are emerging as well in fields such as information technology. To realize these opportunities, and to compete effectively, we will invest in Islanders, through strong educational systems, a world-class infrastructure, an effective technology base, and a positive climate for new ventures and entrepreneurship.

For if one could direct him to do it beforehand, that would mean that what he is going to produce has already been said in the language of everyday technical and political prose: his creation would be false." Paul Ricoeur "Universal Civilization and National Cultures", History and Truth Northwestern University Press, 1965, p.281 There are many amusing examples of attempts to reduce the complexity of the world's art by reference to a tiny sample meant to represent the best of everything: witness the art magazines, which imply by their titles that they present, for example Art in America Canadian Art or Modern Painters or even (however encyclopedic it may be) Arts Atlantic . The big international shows, for example the Venice biennials, the Documentas, and the national surveys like the Whitney in the United States also tend to squash the complexity of the art scene into too-comprehensible packages. Many people believe the art world to be smaller than it is, and it is easy to present this illusion convincingly by reference to small samples like the one I am about to make. The art I see here in Prince Edward Island a sample the self-sampled may or may not show something representative about Prince Edward Island art and culture. What I think

Canada's smallest province has a rich and wonderful history that has molded the culture we share today. The Mi'kmaq were the first people to inhabit Prince Edward Island. They were a peaceful tribe, belonging to the Algonkian group. Not having permanent villages, they camped and fished along the shores during the summer. In the winter, they retreated into the forest where there was shelter, and hunted animals for food and clothing. The Mi'kmaq first called the Island Minegoo , and later changed the name to Abegweit , meaning "cradled on the waves." According to Mi'kmaq legend, Glooscap (the Indian God) wanted a cheerful place to go for his holidays, so he painted the rocks and earth of Abegweit a bright and cheerful red and set it among the brilliant blue waves of the Northumberland Strait.

Pacific News member of Canada Prince Edward Island No point on Prince Edward Island is more than a short distance from salt water. Called "Abegweit," a Native American word meaning "cradled on the waves," Prince Edward Island is the quintessence of North Atlantic charm. The island's population explodes by 500 percent when summer visitors flock here to enjoy surprisingly warm waters, Victorian villages, lobster bakes, steepled churches, and quaint farms. Prince Edward Island draws its life from the sea, harvesting large numbers of shellfish and Irish moss, source of the food stabilizer carrageenan. Rich soils support crops of potatoes, tobacco, and vegetables as well as numerous dairy farms. An era of isolation and staunch tradition came to an end in the summer of 1997 when the highly-controversial Confederation Bridge was completed. The eight-mile-long span linked Prince Edward Island to the Canadian mainland for the first time. History This narrow crescent of land in the Gulf of St. Lawrence was named Abegweit by the Micmac Indians, which means "cradled by the waves." For thousands of years, Indians from the mainland used this island for fishing, hunting, and planting.
