State Of The Planet The number of Critically endangered primates increased from 13 to 19. It says the rise in the number of threatened primate species, from 96 to 116, http://www.rainforestinfo.org.au/background/planet.htm
Extractions: Date: September 28, 2000 GLAND, Switzerland (CNN) Citing a dramatic increase in the number of species threatened with extinction, the World Conservation Union released its "red list" of endangered plants and animals Thursday. In the first update of the list in four years, 11,046 plants and animals were said to be "facing a high risk of extinction in the near future, in almost all cases as a result of human activities." The new list adds over 200 animal species worldwide to the most critically endangered list, including 11 mammals, 14 birds and 38 reptiles. While habitat loss largely through deforestation and the spread of cities is a factor in roughly 90 percent of the endangered listings, the group highlighted three types of animals under attack from specific human threats. Six primate species were added the list, largely due to the "bush meat" trade in parts of Asia and Africa. Animals like the red-shanked douc langur of Vietnam Official Red List and Laos are increasingly targeted site for meat for human consumption.

Extractions: A Most Merry and Illustrated History If Monkeys are Threatened and Gorillas are Endangered, Then Why are Baboons Just Plain VERMIN? Threatened, Endangered, and Vermin Of all the primates, baboons have certainly gotten a bad rap. After all, when the scriptwriter of "The Sands of the Kalahari" wanted the bad guy to get eaten up, he called in a troop of baboons. When the creators of a popular animated cartoon series needed a moronic sidekick for an articulate and intellectual weasel, they picked a baboon. Then there's the hit prime time series where the young daughter yelled that her father was a "stupid, ugly baboon", which caused her dad to lament that she had branded him as the "smelliest and ugliest of the apes." A triple insult, considering baboons are neither smelly, ugly, nor apes. But probably the biggest slap on the snout came when the African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources was drafted in 1968. When it came time to classify the species - whether vulnerable, threatened, or endangered - monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees were all dutifully listed. But just how did baboons rate? Endangered? Threatened? Vulnerable?

This book, "a sensitive and revealing contribution to the legend of a unique sisterhood" (Chicago Tribune), tells of three women who each gave her mature life to the love, study, and defense of another primate species. Koko's Kitten Funny, touching stories about Koko's learning experiences; her fascination with animals; her friendship with another gorilla, Michael; her relationship with her human "mother"; and her mischievous sense of humor. Essential viewing for anyone interested in intelligence, communication, and the nature of humanity. Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees For three decades, primatologist Roger Fouts has been involved in language studies of the chimpanzee, the animal most closely related to human beings. Among his subjects was the renowned Washoe, who was "endowed with a powerful need to learn and communicate," and who developed an extraordinary vocabulary in American sign language. Another chimpanzee, Fouts writes, "never made a grammatical error," which turned a whole school of linguistic theory upside down. While reporting these successes, Fouts also notes that chimpanzees are regularly abused in laboratory settings and that in the wild their number has fallen from 5,000,000 to fewer than 175,000 in the last century.

Extractions: A third of the world's primate species now face extinction. Scientists warn that our closest relatives, the great apes, could be extinct in 20 years' time. The commercial bushmeat trade, human population growth, the tropical hardwood industry, war, deforestation and habitat loss all threaten their survival. There are probably fewer than 100,000 gorillas in world. The most endangered are the eastern or mountain gorillas. There are around 670 left, a slight increase from 620 in 1989, thanks to conservation efforts. Two isolated mountain gorilla populations remain, one in the Bwindi National Park, south-west Uganda, and the other situated near the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda. Following the Rwandan civil war, a million refugees settled in camps on the edge of the Virunga National Park. Besides being a disaster for the people involved, this crisis put considerable pressure on natural resources and disrupted wildlife. Gorilla conservation programmes focus on rural development activities that promote the sound use of natural resources. Gorilla-based tourism, for example, provides a valuable source of revenue and is carefully monitored.

Extractions: Madagascar has more Critically Endangered and Endangered primates than anywhere in the world. Identified as a biodiversity "hotspot," Madagascar has extremely high levels of endemism (species that occur in only one location) but has already lost more than 90 percent of its original natural vegetation. As in 1996, Indonesia harbours the highest number of threatened mammals (135 species). India (80 species) and Brazil (75 species) have moved ahead of China (72 species). Thailand (32 species) and the United States (29 species) are displaced from the "top 20" by Cameroon (38 species) and the Russian Federation (35 species). Tanzania (38 species) has also moved up from 20th to 14th position.

The total number of globally threatened plant species is still small in relation to the total number of plant species, but this is because most plant species have still not been assessed for their level of threat, IUCN says. The only major plant group to have been comprehensively assessed is the conifers, of which 140 species, 16 percent of the total, are threatened. Assessments undertaken by The Nature Conservancy, not yet incorporated in the Red List, indicate that one-third of the plant species in North America are threatened. THE NUMBERS www.redlist.org

On 19 October 2000, the Great Ape Conservation Act of 2000 (HR4320), passed unopposed in the U.S. Senate. It will now go to President Clinton to sign. The bill passed unanimously in the House of Representatives in July after being introduced by Reps. George Miller and James Saxton. It originated in a slightly different form in 1999, when it was introduced by Sen. Jim Jeffords. A press release by the Fund for Animals provides details. The purpose of the Great Apes Conservation Act (GACA) is to provide support and financial resources for the conservation programs of countries within the range of great apes and projects of persons with demonstrated expertise in the conservation of great apes. Please refer to this Bill Summary and Status for up-to-date information. As written, the Act calls for $5 million per year for 5 years to be allocated for in-situ great ape conservation. It is hoped that the Act will receive the maximum possible appropriations to achieve an immediate and lasting effect. However, appropriations are not yet determined. Without concerted efforts to protect it, the species will become extinct. A threatened species is still abundant but declining so rapidly that it is likely to becomeextinct. Birds are especially threatened, followed by primates, fish and various species of plants, and amphibians. Habitat alteration, commercial hunting and harvesting, hunting for sport and subsistence, introduction of alien species, and pest and predator control threaten species. In other cases, the species may have always been rare. Extractions: CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Human activities such as hunting and logging have driven nearly one quarter of the world's primate species - man's closest living relatives - to the brink of extinction, according to a new report. Without concerted action, great apes such as the Sumatran orangutan of Indonesia and the Eastern gorilla of central Africa are at risk of disappearing, according to the report released Thursday by the World Conservation Union, the International Primatological Society and Conservation International. "If we do nothing ... as many as one-quarter of all today's primates will be dead within 20 years," it says. It said Madagascar and Vietnam each have four primates on the list of 25 most endangered. Brazil and Indonesia have three. Sri Lanka and Tanzania have with two each. Colombia, China, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo have one each.
