Extractions: Orem Local Guide Our Mission: "To provide transformative learning experiences to kids of all ages, under one roof." Someone once said that "a boy is the only known substance from which a man is made". The same also applies to girls. We are in the business of transforming raw kidstuff into enriched kid material capable of becoming and doing much more in later years. Our mission is vital to future generations, and ours is the opportunity to transform kids of all ages. We transform non-readers into readers, game-players into problem-solvers, fighters into listeners, timid into confident, distracted into fascinated, less fit into more fit. "I don't know" becomes "let me see". "I can't" becomes "let me try". "Let me try" becomes "I did". "I did" becomes "we did". This is powerful transformative learning, and we are the catalyst. "My kids have better manners at home, and teach me something new every day. My 4-year old has also taken a real liking to books!"

Our small class size enables our instructors to customize their teaching to the specific needs of a particular group of children. Each class is considered unique and the teacher responds to signals from the children in order to provide them with the best possible learning environment. The smaller class sizes pre-exposes children to group classroom learning and socialization before kindergarten and preschool. The classes are 45 minutes in length. The first portion of the class is a brief free-play acclamation time for the children in our playroom. Children play with toys or read books that support the curriculum while listening to the instructor who plays the songs from the class. The primary part of the class focuses on the 12 songs chosen for the current semester. The songs focus on the natural and cultural events associated with the different seasons. As each song is sung, children play instruments to accompany the melody while developing a particular musical or motor skill. Many of the songs involve movement, such as simple dancing or marching to the beat.

Extractions: Choices of instruments for young children are based purely on physical development, which is why keyboard and percussion instruments are a good fit beginning at preschool age. Preschool music programs can develop skills that will transfer to future study, including pitch recognition (Are the sounds high or low?), steady beat (tapping sticks, for example, as the music plays), musical timbre (What makes a drum and clarinet sound different?), and musical forms (responding to music that sounds like a march versus music that sounds like a lullaby). Transitioning to formal lessons by age of 5 or 6, typically, children begin "formal" musical training on the piano. They learn the fundamental theoretical concepts that can easily be transferred to another instrument. The piano also is the only instrument that requires one to read both clefts of music, whereas music for the flute is written for one cleft and the trombone uses the other. For those students choosing to begin with string instruments or piano, preschool music programs offer early experiences. Wind and brass instruments are sometimes more difficult to learn because of smaller muscle control, and band programs usually begin in the 5th grade.

Extractions: Children in this age range tend to do well in a preschool music class, which will give them a good foundation in music basics and will be helpful in later applied (instrumental) lessons. Occasionally, if the child has a strong desire, the child is developmentally advanced, and the parent is very patient, instrument instruction can begin on a child sized instrument or piano. A 15 minute. private lessons works best for these ages. This is generally the youngest age we recommend to start music lessons on an instrument. Students of this age need lots of help from parents, and parents are usually required to attend classes with their child. The going is typically pretty slow at this age, but students who start this young may develope very advanced musical skills, if they continue lessons. Again, parents will need to be very patient with students this young. We offer guitar, violin, and piano for students of these ages with our vocal program beginning at the age of six.
Extractions: The Art of Music By Shel Franco Six bare-foot preschoolers fidget on the checkered rug. A soft-spoken blonde sits cross-legged at the front of the room. She smiles at the children and begins to sing. All at once, the room is alive. Eyes are twinkling. Hands are clapping. And before the song is over, six bare-foot preschoolers are singing, too. So went my son's very first preschool music class. For a music lover like me, the experience warmed my heart and touched my senses. It was hard not to enjoy the music mixed with laughter. But I learned something else, something that could only be taught by my curious 3-year-old son and an excited preschool music class: music plays an important, if not critical, role in a preschooler's life. The Importance of Music Why is it so important to expose a child to music? For one thing, the exposure might be intellectually stimulating. "Beginning in the mid-90s the country was a-buzz with the research that there is a certain window of opportunity for the musical neurons to be connected," says Rachel Kramer, assistant executive director for Programs and Convention for Music Teachers National Association, in Cincinnati, Ohio. "Introducing music to children before the age of 3 would solidify this connection, and that connecting these neurons would in fact, increase the spatial reasoning capabilities of a child." The importance of music in a child's life can be much less dramatic than increasing intelligence, but even more meaningful. Kramer, who is also the owner of the Baldwin Music Education Center, a 36-year-old preschool music program, says that exposure to music and participation in preschool music classes help a child to develop self-expression and social skills, not to mention the foundations for later musical instruction: keeping a steady beat and matching pitch.

These are practical tips that we have discovered in our experiences with teaching hundreds of students each year for the past 25 years. 1. How Young is too Young - Starting at the Right Age Adults can begin any instrumental or vocal program at any time. The success is based on how willing the adult is to commit to practicing. We teach many adult beginner students of all ages, even in their 60s and 70s. For children, starting at the right age is a key element to the success of their lessons. Some people will tell you the sooner the better, but this is not always true. If a child is placed into private lessons too soon, they may feel overwhelmed and frustrated and want to stop lessons. It is never beneficial to continue an unpleasant experience which could cause the child negative feelings regarding music in general. Children who are older than the suggested earliest starting age usually do very well. The following are guidelines we have found to be successful in determining how young a child can start taking music lessons.

While piano and singing lessons may not exactly be turning your child into the next Mozart or Barbra Streisand, they could very well be helping your child develop the math, science, and literacy skills needed to excel in our technology-driven society. Participation in musical activities can greatly enhance a child's spatial intelligence - the intelligence required to perform high-level mathematics and science as well as music - according to researchers at the University of California at Irvine. "We've known for quite some time that musical activities are vital to the educational, emotional, and physical development of children," says John D. Kemp, CEO of Very Special Arts. "Children naturally learn through interactive experiences," said Mr. Kemp. "Music provides children with a highly motivating way to develop language skills, imagination, creativity, and an understanding of their culture. This new research shows that musical activity may be critical to the development of math and science skills." To help parents take advantage of the benefits of music for their preschool children, Very Special Arts recommends several fun, simple, and educational activities that can be done at home. The following activities are designed to improve both the mental and physical preparedness of preschoolers and kindergartners with and without disabilities.
