The issue of teen pregnancy is important to our FHA group at Sierra Middle School. Our project goal was to teach as many young people as possible about teen pregnancy and how to prevent it. We also wanted to teach young people that with the help of the six pillars of Character Counts prevention of teen pregnancy would be easier. We selected this goal because we found in our research that, on the average sexually active teenagers had been thirteen years old at first intercourse, and New Mexico ranks fifth in the nation in teen pregnancy rankings and third in teen birth rankings. We thought that the other students at Sierra needed to hear about teen pregnancy prevention. We got together and discussed a plan to teach it to the classes at Sierra Middle School. Some of our FHA members attended a workshop in the fall at ENMU-R that made us aware of the problem of teen pregnancy in New Mexico.

Particular interest in perceptions of quality among various constituents , as well as the nature, determinants, and consequences of clients interactions with service delivery systems, has created a need for more social science research in this area. Unintended Pregnancy Among Newly Married Couples In Shanghai The consequences, for the child and the family, of unintended pregnancies that are pregnancy and women s use of prenatal care in Ecuador, Social science http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/journals/3000604.html
Extractions: Volume 30, Number 1, March 2004 By Yan Che and John Cleland CONTEXT: Though contraceptive failure and induced abortion in China have both attracted research attention, the somewhat broader topic of unintended pregnancy has been neglected. METHODS: A total of 7,872 newly married couples, enrolled between 1987 and 1988, were followed up until 1994-1995; only 2% were lost to follow-up. During face-to-face interviews, background and fertility-related data were collected. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used to assess associations with unintended pregnancy. RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS: Unintended pregnancies are common among married couples in Shanghai. Policies to reduce unintended pregnancies, and abortions, should focus particularly on postpartum contraception. International Family Planning Perspectives, 2004, 30(1):6-11 In the United States, a substantial literature, much of it based on successive rounds of the National Survey of Family Growth, documents the incidence and correlates of unintended pregnancy and childbearing. For developing countries, the Demographic and Health Surveys have provided a major database.

Appearing pregnant even though she's not, this female potbelly seahorse acquired her name for obvious reasons. This species grows to 8 inches in height in Pacific sea grass beds and rocky reefs near Australia and New Zealand. Males need about 20 days to complete a pregnancy. This seahorse is part of a popular exhibit at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium. (Edward Lines/Shedd Aquarium) The more elaborate hypothesesabout warp-speed progress in obstetrics or Tiger Woods endorsing maternity clotheshave yet to receive rigorous testing. However, some of the basic theories of sexual behavior and sexual selection are getting attention thanks to a burst of new studies in the topsy-turvy social world of the seahorse. In these unusual fish, the female still produces the eggs, but she deposits them into a pouch in her mate's body. Then she swims away, returning only for 5 to 10 minutes once a day during his several weeks of pregnancy. Finally, his distended body contracts and labors as he expels tiny seahorses one by one. Males of some species give birth to a few dozen, but others bear more than 100, and one Caribbean male astonished researchers as his half-tablespoon pouch held more than 1,500 babies.

He props himself up and looks at the camera.) God, I'll be glad when this is over. They say you're supposed to glow, but I guess that doesn't happen to men. I just feel huge, and there's this pressure on my bladder and stomach. Maybe all those people marching outside the hospital are right: maybe men really aren't made for this. But, well, I wanted to have a baby. I'm not the first man to go through this, of course, but there still aren't very many of us. Someday, though, this'll be common, and those TV commentators will stop calling "male pregnancy" an oxymoron. So why shouldn't a man have a baby if he wants one? Technically, it's not that difficult; they were doing male-pregancy experiments with animals over thirty years ago, back in the 1980s.

Extractions: AAFP Home Page Journals Vol. 61/No. 4 (February 15, 2000) E ctopic pregnancy is any pregnancy in which the fertilized ovum implants outside the intrauterine cavity. More than 95 percent of ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tubes. Another 2.5 percent occur in the cornua of the uterus, and the remainder are found in the ovary, cervix or abdominal cavity. Because none of these anatomic sites can accommodate placental attachment or a growing embryo, the potential for rupture and hemorrhage always exists. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy is a true medical emergency. It is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester and accounts for 10 to 15 percent of all maternal deaths. Epidemiology The number of ectopic pregnancies has increased dramatically in the past few decades. Based on hospital discharge data, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy has risen from 4.5 cases per 1,000 pregnancies in 1970 to 19.7 cases per 1,000 pregnancies in 1992.
