This is the territory of the Pony Express, the Overland Stage, Boot Hill, the Oregon and Mormon Trails. This is where the mighty Missouri flows, and where the Sioux and the Omaha have flourished. As a whole class, students read three chapters of Roughing It In discussion and through writing assignments they focus on the ways in which Twain developed a distinctive Western voice, analyze how his persona functions in the telling of the tales, and scrutinize the tales for both the stereotypes and truths they reveal about a West which was vanishing even as Twain wrote about it. Then students break up into smaller groups, each assigned the task of reading and reporting on a chapter of Roughing It to the rest of the class. Students write creative pieces inspired by Twain as well as analytical essays about his work. Objectives

Extractions: Cochran, Eddie Eddie Cochran, the pioneering rock'n'roll songwriter, singer, and guitarist with the James Dean good looks, was a product of a Plains background, even though his place of birth remains disputed. Some rock references maintain that he was born in Oklahoma City; others have him coming into the world at Albert Lea, Minnesota. The date, October 3, 1938, is not in dispute. Nor is the fact that his parents moved from Oklahoma City to Albert Lea at some point during the 1930s. Cochran himself claimed Oklahoma City as his hometown, and the country and western music which his parents had absorbed in Oklahoma was a formative influence on the young musician. Eddie Cochran, despite this early death, had lasting impact on rock music. Many artists, including the Sex Pistols and, most famously, The Who, have recorded his songs. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. David Wishart

Native Americans, trappers, traders, settlers, the Pony Express, and railroad construction will be some of the subjects illustrated in the close to fifty hand-colored lithographs and wood engravings featured in this display. Spanning the period 1835-1886, these images were created by prominent artists such as John J. Audubon, Albert Bierstadt, Karl Bodmer, George Catlin, and Frederic Remington. They offered 19th-century Americans their first views of the West. Today these prints provide a window on a frontier that has largely vanished. Two of the best known early artist-explorers to reach the Western frontier in the 1840s were Philadelphia-born artist George Catlin and Swiss artist Karl Bodmer. Thirteen of their memorable images showing the customs of various tribes of the Great Plains, as well as distinguished portraits of their chiefs, will be part of this display.
