Roy Vagelos Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, has contributed to the development of novel methods of polymer synthesis for both covalent and supramolecular systems ranging from liquid-crystalline polymers to dendrimers. Percec's research has focused on a wide variety of topics, including the synthesis and chemistry of poly(arylacetylene)s, metal-catalyzed ion-radical arylations, phase-transfer catalyzed polymerizations, living radical polymerizations, and supramolecular polymer chemistry. Born in 1946, he obtained his Ph.D. at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Jassy, Romania, in 1976. His career in polymer chemistry, he says, was influenced by many people, including his parents. During the last few weeks at high school, he had several classes of organic chemistry that persuaded him to switch to polymer chemistry. "My parents were not happy with my decision," he says. "However, nature was a model for art, and I therefore decided to use it as an inspiration for the construction of complex molecular, macromolecular, and supramolecular architectures." In the late 1970s, he elaborated methods for the synthesis and structural analysis of cis-poly(phenylacetylene)s that today provide the most frequently used models for nonbiological helical macromolecules.

Key publications We use computer calculations to determine the structure of molecules and to help understand how molecules react with one another. Using the laws of quantum mechanics, we can calculate from first principles the structures of molecules, their vibrational frequencies and their energies. This provides detailed information on the mechanisms of reactions, as well as calculations of their kinetics and thermodynamics. Much of this information is very difficult to obtain experimentally, particularly for very reactive or hazardous compounds. Quantum chemistry provides a viable alternative approach for studying these compounds. We use this technique to solve a range of problems in chemistry, especially for improving the synthesis of polymers.

Extractions: BLACKSBURG, May 3, 1996 James McGrath, the Ethyl Professor of chemistry at Virginia Tech, has won the Herman F. Mark Award in Polymer Chemistry from the American Chemical Society. The society gives the award in even-numbered years to "recognize outstanding research and leadership in polymer science." McGrath has been co-director of the Polymer Materials and Interface Lab (PMIL) at Virginia Tech since 1978 and director of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center on High Performance Polymeric Adhesives and Composites since 1989. His colleagues consider him to be "a world-class polymer chemist." McGrath holds more than 30 patents and has written six books, 50 book chapters, and more than 250 articles in scientific journals. He received the university's Alumni Award for Research Excellence in 1993. McGrath came to Virginia Tech in 1975 from Union Carbide Corp., where he was a research scientist and group leader. By 1979, he was a full professor, and in 1986 he received the Ethyl Chaired Professorship in chemistry. Even though it was far away from Japan's principal cities, Takayama has been called a "little Kyoto" because of the similarity of its landform to Kyoto, the city sits in a basin surrounded by mountains with a river flowing through it, and because of its long-established cultural heritage and tradition. In this small town, rich in natural beauty, I spent my days enthusiastically collecting insects and plants, and making radios. My affinity for science was awakened and grew during in these ten years. Long after I became a polymer scientist, I occasionally remembered a short composition I had written during my last year in junior high school. At that time students compiled a commemorative collection of compositions describing our future dreams. As I recalled, I wrote something about my wish to be a scientist in the future and to conduct research on plastics useful for ordinary people. I cannot be sure what I wrote exactly because I lost the book of essays during repeated moves afterwards. I had long regretted this loss because I wanted to know more about why and how a junior high school boy decided on a future research career in plastics.
