The resignations were announced by White House press secretary Scott McClellan, who said Bush had accepted the decisions of both secretaries. "The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved," Ashcroft wrote in a five-page handwritten letter to Bush, adding that he believed that the Justice Department "would be well served by new leadership and fresh inspiration" and that "my energies and talents should be directed toward other challenging horizons." Extractions: Bent out of shape By JP Bender 'Wasting Your tax dollars' With summer vacation over, our city officials have returned to work, and the city commission, like the Miami Dolphins, has kicked off its season opener. As always, it beckons you back as an optimist - but in your heart of hearts you know your spirit will be broken a thousand times. Last week at the initial meeting, they gave preliminary thumbs up to the city manager's proposed budget for 2006. These rubber stamp commissioners postured and talked like they knew and understood the proposed $181 million budget. What a joke. It was obvious they didn't understand the proposed budget at all.

Extractions: Two ambitious Democrats, one 33 and the other 31, have announced their candidacies for attorney general. I must keep the perspective that both are older than Bill Clinton was when he held the office. A Republican state legislator who is a business lawyer with a staid and prestigious firm appears inclined to run as well, and he may get a primary opponent from the GOP's zany anti-immigrant right wing. That gives me the opportunity to consider the office itself, which is of utmost importance to government but not all that challenging politically. Attorney general is a snap, actually, so long as the staff is good and the bulk of that competence hangs around from one administration to the next to transcend the political passers-through on their way up or out. When he was the attorney general for one term while killing time for his defining U.S. Senate run, Mark Pryor told me he had given the staff of lawyers only one instruction: Y'all do the law; I'll do the politics. That ought to be in the oath of office.

Oh well, this is just who I amâ¦and it apparently doesnât bother me enough to get up and fix it. Put a bid in on a house this morning. I really love this house, but my instincts are telling me that I am not going to get it. There were a number of people bidding on this property so I will not be surprised if it goes to someone else. Itâs one of those cute little houses that has a real nice feel â but I have adopted a philosophy â if it is meant to be mine it will be, if not, oh well, life goes on and it was not meant for me. This keeps me from going nuts hoping for something and then losing it. I know that whether or not I buy this house, my life will go on and all will be well. Interestingly enough, I have had a strange association unearthed by this whole house buying quest. I have been hesitant to buy a house out of some deeply buried fear that if I buy a house I will be accepting that I will never get married again. Okay, I understand that this is not the case, but it is a fear that has found itself into my brainâ¦.odd how those little buggers work their way in thereâ¦

I have to say that I was happy to see that FEMA and W. got the message of my previous blog (see below) and not only took it to heart but appointed the creator of this "duct tape and plastic" terrorism protection plan to head FEMA! Here come the naysayers now, all whining about the Homeland Security Department's handling of the New Orleans disaster. The liberal media is all upset about the fact that Homeland Security took over the bleeding-heart FEMA organization and gave that organization direction. Why, before Michael Chertoff took over, FEMA was actually looking at ways to develop buildings to withstand these Acts of God! Talk about a loose cannon.
