Extractions: Other People's Money : Beyond business stereotypes For starters, Other People's Money has a really sharp script, based on an off Broadway play. A movie about the philosophy of market economics might not sound likely to be dramatically interesting, but they built this around strong characters and plot. They mostly show, not tell. It turns out to be a charming romantic comedy with a lot of philosophical nuance. Danny DeVito stars as Larry the Liquidator, a corporate raider who makes money for his shareholders by finding badly run companies with strong assets, and getting rid of the dead weight. Gregory Peck plays his counterpart, Andrew Jorgenson. Jorgenson runs an old family business, New England Wire and Cable Company. As an old New England stalwart, he sees himself as the paternalistic protector of his workers and community. The larger corporation overall is doing great, but the original business, the factory, has been losing bunches of money. Yet Jorgenson insists on keeping the thing open, losing big money day after day. Larry wants to get control of the company and shut down the white elephant factory, spinning off the other assets in an economically rational manner. Naturally, he gets portrayed in the community as a bad guy who doesn't care about the poor workers.

National Chairmans Letter Prayer Alert September 17, 2005 During the darkest days of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress often called for a day of thanksgiving, fasting, and prayer. Congress' purpose was to implore God to give inspiration and help to the forces fighting for Freedom. Americas' prayers were heard and a Free government was established, a governmental system which has since been taken to many parts of the world. Basic Freedoms are under attack again in our nation. Checks and Balances, so carefully crafted by the Founders, are the keystone of Americas' Freedom. Socialists and other totalitarians are attempting to strip Congress of Legislative power, collecting this power in the office of the President. Legislative, Judicial, and Executive power, concentrated in the office of the President, is the very definition of a dictator, a tyrant. America again needs Divine Intervention to turn back the tide of the collectivists. Will you join us this weekend in a day of thanksgiving, prayer, and if your religious observance includes it, fasting, so that our Freedom may be preserved. Specifically, we ask you to pray for the following:

Am uploading a bunch of photos of moonbats in action at my Flickr site . Here's a sample: Update The Political Teen has video of Cindy Sheehan's speech. I have video clips of Sheehan, Cynthia McKinney, and the death cries of the moonbats on my Treo 650, which I'll be attempting to upload later tonight. Kris at Reflections of a Libertarian Republican was also photoblogging the rally/march. Excellent photos and narrative.

This is a follow-up from Eric Chang , a Malaysian expat held-up in Houston when Hurricane Rita made the landfall yesterday, 90 miles east of the Texan city, and weakened to category 3 (125mph) when it landed. Here's a photo of the minimal damage in his neighborhood. Meanwhile, according to The Independent scientists now say the next target for a hurricane could be New York, which is rated by The National Hurricane Centre as the fifth most vulnerable Hurricane-prone area in the US. The top four have all been hit in the past two years. Jeff, You probably already know this. The hurricane's eye shifted and made landfall in Beaumont/Lake Charles area close to the border between Texas and Louisiana. This is about 90 miles east of Houston and the hurricane has weakened to category 3 (125mph) when it landed. While Houston area lucked out and largely escaped major damage, this is very unfortunate for people in Beaumont/Lake Charles area. I attempted to contact a Sarawakian living in Beaumont this morning but have not establish contact. Sporadic looting has been reported in Beaumont.

The Power Of Words Emotional appeals, fallacies, manipulations, disinformation, misdirection, political correctness and the nature of truth. How some people get others to agree with their point of view, give them what they want, do what they ask and buy what they are selling. http://www.aniota.com/~jwhite/words.html
Extractions: Generally, when people get their own way with others, they do it with words; they want others to agree with their point of view, give them what they want, do what they ask and buy what they are selling. From the car salesman's hard sell, the hammering of TV commercials, the relative's request for a loan, the doctor's diagnosis to the child's pleading to stay up late, the seduction and/or assault of words is continuous. In these verbal contests between one person's desires and another's, some people find they always lose, convinced they must be wrong, while others consistently win; their logic, their reasons are so powerful, so compelling, they almost force others to change their opinions, their beliefs and their behavior to comply with what's being asked. This enormous power is in the meaning of the words, what they mean to the person who hears them. Far more than simple communication, truth, falsehood and the infinite shades between them, words have the power to manipulate other people's thinking and behavior. These powers have been defined as fallacious arguments. There are 20 or so of these misleading and deceptive arguments. Their tremendous power lies in the fact that they elicit emotional responses in those who hear them. While the arguments appear to relate to the subject under discussioon, they do not. In most cases they have little to do with the subject at all.

The Floating Corpse of New Orleans Floating corpses, dehydrated babies, fires, National Guard soldiers with shoot-to-kill orders. This is a state of emergency. It is this the state of exception that, according to Giorgio Agamben, characterizes our current political order. The state of exception has become the rule not only in far-off lands and isolated prisons, but even in the center of the American heartland. The London Attacks Our world is divided into masters and slaves, rich economies and poor economies, those with opportunity and those with nothing but despair. But it is not the masters who suffer from terror blasts: it is the âcommonâ people, those in the street, simple folk who die and are maimed. It was the same on March 11, 2004, when bombers sent death to people from the working-class Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares, and for years before in bombings of the open-air market of Jerusalemâs Mahane Yehuda that tore through people searching for cheap tomatoes. Those who love London, in all of its cosmopolitan humanity, share the mourning and anger of its citizens today.

Keats Bicentenary An article from the Socialist Review published December 1995 which looks at the political aspects of the author's works. http://pubs.socialistreviewindex.org.uk/sr192/cox.htm
Extractions: A generation of poets was inspired by the French Revolution of 1789, but by the time England defeated France at the battle of Waterloo in 1815 these poets had become extremely conservative. Years of acute social crisis followed Waterloothe years of the Luddite risings, the Pentridge rebellion and the reform movementwhich shaped the work of a new generation of radical poets: Shelley, Byron and Keats. The political works of all these poets have been systematically buried, but John Keats's reputation has probably suffered the most. The facts of Keats's lifehis unfulfilled love for Fanny Brawne and his early deathconfirm him as the archetypal poet. His contemporaries believed his death was hastened by his sensitivity when he read bad reviews of his work. Byron wrote sneeringly but with typical wit, 'Tis strange the mind, that very fiery particle/Should let itself be snuffed out by an article.' Even Shelley, who admired Keats, described him as, 'Like a pale flower by some sad maiden cherished'. In reality John Keats was a passionately committed political writer, whose life was a battle against poverty and ill health. He was the son of a stable hand, left school at 14, was apprenticed to a doctor at 16 but gave up this job to write poetry. He was poor all his life, too poor to vote, or marry Fanny or deal with the tuberculosis which killed many of his close family, including his beloved brother Tom in 1818, and eventually himself. He refused to be ashamed of his origins despite the vicious attacks of his reviewers who were as offended by his low birth as by his politics.
